Everything is for the best in this best of all worlds

Вольтер
Вольтер

Phraseologism: Everything is for the best in this best of worlds.

Meaning: About expecting something good in any situation.

Origin: This saying ("Tout est pour le mieux dans le meilleur des mondes possibles") is borrowed from Voltaire's novel "Candide" (1759), in which, however, it is given in a slightly different edition. In chapter 1, Dr. Pangloss states that everything is expedient "in the best possible world" ("dans le meilleur des mondes possibles") and that "everything is for the best" ("tout est au mieux"), the same thought varies and in other chapters of the novel. In Candida, Leibniz's theory of "pre-established harmony" is mocked, and the cited quotations parody Leibniz's statement in Theodicy (1710): "God would not have created the world if it were not the best of all possible."

Random phraseology:

Pull the rope.

Meaning:

To procrastinate, to drag out any business, to speak monotonously and tediously.

Origin:

Gimp - the thinnest gold, silver or copper thread, which was used to embroider galloons, aiguillettes and other decorations of officer uniforms, as well as chasubles of priests and simply rich costumes. It was made in a handicraft way, by heating the metal and carefully pulling out a thin wire with tongs. This process was extremely long, slow and painstaking, so that over time the expression "pull the wire" began to refer to any protracted and monotonous business or conversation.

Artificial leather for touch emulation 15.04.2024

In a modern technology world where distance is becoming increasingly commonplace, maintaining connection and a sense of closeness is important. Recent developments in artificial skin by German scientists from Saarland University represent a new era in virtual interactions. German researchers from Saarland University have developed ultra-thin films that can transmit the sensation of touch over a distance. This cutting-edge technology provides new opportunities for virtual communication, especially for those who find themselves far from their loved ones. The ultra-thin films developed by the researchers, just 50 micrometers thick, can be integrated into textiles and worn like a second skin. These films act as sensors that recognize tactile signals from mom or dad, and as actuators that transmit these movements to the baby. Parents' touch to the fabric activates sensors that react to pressure and deform the ultra-thin film. This ... >>

The attractiveness of caring men 14.04.2024

The stereotype that women prefer "bad boys" has long been widespread. However, recent research conducted by British scientists from Monash University offers a new perspective on this issue. They looked at how women responded to men's emotional responsibility and willingness to help others. The study's findings could change our understanding of what makes men attractive to women. A study conducted by scientists from Monash University leads to new findings about men's attractiveness to women. In the experiment, women were shown photographs of men with brief stories about their behavior in various situations, including their reaction to an encounter with a homeless person. Some of the men ignored the homeless man, while others helped him, such as buying him food. A study found that men who showed empathy and kindness were more attractive to women compared to men who showed empathy and kindness. ... >>

Carbon nanotubes may be a strong carcinogen 18.11.2017

Carbon nanotubes are known to have a number of unique properties, ranging from the highest strength, many times higher than the strength of steel, to high electrical conductivity. This makes them a truly fantastic material that should find application in a variety of areas, from integrated circuits and fuel cells to the creation of heavy-duty threads (including the manufacture of a cable for a space elevator) and artificial muscles. However, like many materials new to science, it also contains certain dangers, in particular, in terms of the effects on the human and animal organisms.

Medical research data from the British Medical Research Council (MRC) agency warns us that carbon nanotubes can be quite a strong carcinogen, similar in properties to asbestos.

Research by MRC staff indicates that long, biologically stable fibers lead to serious lung diseases, such as mesothelioma, a malignant neoplasm that develops from the tissue that lines the surface of the chest, abdomen, or heart. Doctors know that the main risk factor for mesothelioma is exposure to asbestos. Now, a material that is unique in its properties is also at risk. The fact is that it is quite difficult for the body to get rid of microscopic, chemically extremely neutral particles, which are carbon nanotubes.

At the moment, scientists are still cautious about making any predictions. Carbon nanotubes are just entering our lives, and there are not yet enough statistical data to speak with confidence about their carcinogenicity. However, in their "biological" properties, they are very close to asbestos, a well-known carcinogenic material, the use of which is being actively abandoned today.

Increasing production of carbon nanotubes is forcing medical professionals to take this threat more seriously. Of course, there is no talk of abandoning the production and use of the latest material yet, but one must be extremely careful about the possible consequences of prolonged contact of the human body with nanotubes. At least until reliable data about their safety are obtained.
