Phraseologism: Virgil.

Meaning: An experienced, reliable guide in a new, unfamiliar environment, in a hostile environment, or a consultant in difficult circumstances (jokingly ironic).

Origin: The famous Roman poet Virgil (Publius Virgil Maron, 70-19 BC) was considered a fine connoisseur of human souls and deeds. Therefore, the Italian poet and thinker Dante Alighieri (1265-1321) in his "Divine Comedy" chooses Virgil as his guide in his wanderings through the afterlife, where people are judged and punished according to their deeds.

Origin:

The expression arose during the rise of the Moscow principality, when a large tribute was levied from other cities and principalities. Cities sent petitioners to Moscow with complaints of injustice. Often cruel punishments were also carried out by the Muscovite tsar himself, who saw in the complaints of the petitioners an act of popular dissatisfaction with the policy of centralization.
