Artificial leather for touch emulation 15.04.2024

In a modern technology world where distance is becoming increasingly commonplace, maintaining connection and a sense of closeness is important. Recent developments in artificial skin by German scientists from Saarland University represent a new era in virtual interactions. German researchers from Saarland University have developed ultra-thin films that can transmit the sensation of touch over a distance. This cutting-edge technology provides new opportunities for virtual communication, especially for those who find themselves far from their loved ones. The ultra-thin films developed by the researchers, just 50 micrometers thick, can be integrated into textiles and worn like a second skin. These films act as sensors that recognize tactile signals from mom or dad, and as actuators that transmit these movements to the baby. Parents' touch to the fabric activates sensors that react to pressure and deform the ultra-thin film. This ... >>

The attractiveness of caring men 14.04.2024

The stereotype that women prefer "bad boys" has long been widespread. However, recent research conducted by British scientists from Monash University offers a new perspective on this issue. They looked at how women responded to men's emotional responsibility and willingness to help others. The study's findings could change our understanding of what makes men attractive to women. A study conducted by scientists from Monash University leads to new findings about men's attractiveness to women. In the experiment, women were shown photographs of men with brief stories about their behavior in various situations, including their reaction to an encounter with a homeless person. Some of the men ignored the homeless man, while others helped him, such as buying him food. A study found that men who showed empathy and kindness were more attractive to women compared to men who showed empathy and kindness. ... >>

Charging electric vehicles in 10 minutes 16.06.2021

The inventor of the graphite anode for lithium-ion batteries, Dr. Rachid Yazami, said he could make consumer electronics, cars and other electric vehicles charge in minutes. At one time, his invention of a graphite anode, which significantly improved the quality, stability and life expectancy of batteries.

If it now takes Tesla about 70 minutes to charge, his company's development can do it 7 times faster. If conventional batteries are charged with direct current, the new method puts more emphasis on voltage control rather than current type. He compared the voltage to the steps of a ladder - in order to move to the next, it must remain stable for some time. This method allows the batteries to "rest" during the charging process and even changes the nature of their reaction to electric current.

At KVI, where research is being conducted, extending battery life is an important factor. The technology created by the company increases their service life - for example, instead of five years, the batteries will be able to work all ten, because during the charging process they do not heat up to high temperatures and are not subject to other factors.

Other tasks to be solved are increasing the capacity and safety of batteries. According to Yazami, since the introduction of lithium-ion batteries in 1991, their specific capacity increased steadily until 2015 or 2016, when it plateaued. At the moment, there are no batteries with a capacity higher than 290 Wh per kilogram - at least commercial options. Another problem is the risk of battery fire. According to Dr. Yazami, although it is impossible to prevent such incidents, many cases can be predicted weeks or even months in advance, after which the owner himself can decide whether he needs to service or replace the battery altogether.
