The expression goes back to Mark Tullius Cicero. Popularizing Greek culture in Rome, Cicero gave a significant place in his writings to the theory of oratory, carefully developed by the Greeks. He especially singled out the inhabitants of Attica, famous for their eloquence. In 61 BC. e. Cicero, thanking for the letters of his correspondent, the writer Titus Pomponius Atticus, wrote: "All of them were not only sprinkled with salt of wit, as the students of orators say, but also remarkable in the manifestations of your friendship." Julius Caesar, an imaginary participant in the conversation, is left, as a recognized master of jokes, to express his opinion. LEDs are known for their high energy efficiency and longevity, and the main barrier to widespread use as an indoor lighting source is cold bluish light. Scientists from the University of Georgia (USA) have created the first warm white LED with a single light emitting element.

“Now LEDs are mainly used in flashes and car headlights, but they produce a bluish cold light,” says Associate Professor Zhengwei Pan, lead author of the study. ".

Two quantities are used to describe artificial light, Pan says. The first is color temperature, measured in degrees Kelvin. Temperatures just below 4000 K are ideal for indoor lighting. And the bluish light of existing LEDs has a temperature of more than 5000 K. The second important value, the color rendering index, characterizes the correspondence of the color rendering to natural light. Here, for indoor lighting, values ​​above 80 are ideal, with a decrease in this parameter, the colors begin to look unnatural. The developed material gives a color that fits into both constraints: with a color temperature of less than 4000 K and a color rendering index of 85.

Warm light can also be obtained from a bluish LED by covering it with a separate layer of phosphor, which has different characteristics of the emitted light. But the combination of materials in exact proportions is a rather complicated and expensive procedure, and the resulting light is unstable, since substances react differently to temperature changes. The use of a single phosphor solves all these problems. To create it, scientists mixed powders of graphite and oxides of europium, aluminum and barium in the smallest quantities, and then heated the mixture to 1450 degrees. The energy efficiency of the new phosphor is still noticeably lower than the existing cold LEDs. In addition, even slight changes in temperature and pressure during its creation can change the color characteristics, which is also critical for industrial production.

The phosphor has a new, never before observed crystal structure. This gives hope that a thorough study of matter at the atomic level will help improve its properties and get rid of the described difficulties. "We still have a lot of work to do," says Pan. "But the resulting color temperature and color rendering would be a great starting point."
