Apple of discord

Ancient Greek and Roman mythology
Ancient Greek and Roman mythology

Phraseologism: Apple of discord.

Meaning: Reason, reason for a quarrel, dispute, serious disagreement (book).

Origin: From ancient Greek mythology. Once, the goddess of discord and enmity, Eris, threw a golden apple on the banquet table. It had only one dedication word - "To the most beautiful". The female goddesses who were at the feast - Hera, Athena and Aphrodite - began a dispute about who should own this apple. They called the young man Paris, the son of the Trojan king Priam, to judge. And Paris awarded this apple to the goddess of love, Aphrodite. In gratitude for this, Aphrodite helped Paris kidnap Helen, the wife of the Spartan king Menelaus, which later became the cause of the Trojan War. So the goddess of discord, Eris, achieved her goal: first a dispute arose, then a war. Synonymous with cause for enmity and dispute. For the first time in this sense, this phrase was used by the Roman historian Justin (II century), who, apparently, should be considered the author of this winged expression.

Random phraseology:

Meshchanskoe happiness.

Meaning:

About life without high goals, aspirations, filled with petty, everyday worries, acquisitions, etc.

Origin:

Title of the story (1861) by Nikolai Gerasimovich Pomyalovsky (1835-1863).

Artificial leather for touch emulation 15.04.2024

In a modern technology world where distance is becoming increasingly commonplace, maintaining connection and a sense of closeness is important. Recent developments in artificial skin by German scientists from Saarland University represent a new era in virtual interactions. German researchers from Saarland University have developed ultra-thin films that can transmit the sensation of touch over a distance. This cutting-edge technology provides new opportunities for virtual communication, especially for those who find themselves far from their loved ones. The ultra-thin films developed by the researchers, just 50 micrometers thick, can be integrated into textiles and worn like a second skin. These films act as sensors that recognize tactile signals from mom or dad, and as actuators that transmit these movements to the baby. Parents' touch to the fabric activates sensors that react to pressure and deform the ultra-thin film. This ... >>

The attractiveness of caring men 14.04.2024

The stereotype that women prefer "bad boys" has long been widespread. However, recent research conducted by British scientists from Monash University offers a new perspective on this issue. They looked at how women responded to men's emotional responsibility and willingness to help others. The study's findings could change our understanding of what makes men attractive to women. A study conducted by scientists from Monash University leads to new findings about men's attractiveness to women. In the experiment, women were shown photographs of men with brief stories about their behavior in various situations, including their reaction to an encounter with a homeless person. Some of the men ignored the homeless man, while others helped him, such as buying him food. AUO to release 4,3-inch AMOLED panels 05.08.2012

AU Optronics (AUO) President Paul Peng has announced plans for mass production of 4,3-inch AMOLED panels. According to him, the production of products was supposed to begin in the second quarter of this year, however, due to some delays, it had to be postponed until the third quarter.

According to Mr. Penh, the development of new technologies and the development process are not the only challenges faced in the production of panels. An important factor is close cooperation with suppliers of materials and players in the final market.

The products in question will have a density of up to 257 ppi (with a diagonal of 4,3 inches, this corresponds to a resolution of 960 x 540 pixels), which is a record for AMOLED panels to date. AUO engineers are working to integrate in-cell touch technology into AMOLED panels to make displays thinner and lighter, as well as achieve higher sensitivity.

Another direction of development is the one glass solution (OGS) technology, the essence of which is to combine the elements of the display and the outer glass together, which also makes it possible to reduce the thickness of devices. In addition to smartphones, the technology will find application in ultrabooks and tablets, but their share will be only 2-3%.
