Эльдорадо

Ancient Greek and Roman mythology
Ancient Greek and Roman mythology

Phraseologism: El Dorado.

Meaning: A symbol of untold wealth, a dream country that promises a happy, carefree life.

Origin: From Spanish: "El Dorado". Translation: "Gilded (sprinkled with gold)". So the Spanish conquistador Martinez called the mythical Indian state of South America, where, according to the ideas of the Spanish conquerors, gold was in abundance and one could quickly get rich. He even gave a description of this country, where he allegedly lived for seven months in the city of Manoa, which is ruled by a king named Moxo, who lives in fantastic luxury. These stories formed the basis of the legend of the "country of gold" - Eldorado, which was unsuccessfully sought by both the Spaniards and expeditions from other countries until the 1826th century. The last of these is an expedition sent (1759) by an English financial company. Its members even tried to drain Lake Guatavita in search of gold. The British believed that the country of Eldorado should be located in the region of this lake. Apparently, such ideas were based on vague information that had come down to them about the religious rites of the Indian tribes that inhabited modern Colombia, when the leader (cacique) traveled on certain days to the sacred lake Guatavita, showered himself with golden sand, making a sacrifice, after which he entered the water of the lake and washed off the gold. Of course, the search for the country of Eldorado ended in failure, but they enriched science with new geographical and ethnographic observations. The word "Eldorado" became popular after the publication of the novel "Candide" (1694) by the French writer-educator Voltaire (pseudonym Francois Marie Arouet, 1778-XNUMX), who offered the reader his description of this mythical country.

Artificial leather for touch emulation 15.04.2024

In a modern technology world where distance is becoming increasingly commonplace, maintaining connection and a sense of closeness is important. Recent developments in artificial skin by German scientists from Saarland University represent a new era in virtual interactions. German researchers from Saarland University have developed ultra-thin films that can transmit the sensation of touch over a distance. This cutting-edge technology provides new opportunities for virtual communication, especially for those who find themselves far from their loved ones. The ultra-thin films developed by the researchers, just 50 micrometers thick, can be integrated into textiles and worn like a second skin. These films act as sensors that recognize tactile signals from mom or dad, and as actuators that transmit these movements to the baby. Parents' touch to the fabric activates sensors that react to pressure and deform the ultra-thin film. This ... >>
