Caesar is not above grammarians

Tiberius
Tiberius

Phraseologism: Caesar is not above grammarians.

Meaning: No matter how high a position an administrator holds, he must obey the opinion of competent people, specialists, etc.

Origin: From Latin: Nee Ceasar non supra grammaticos. The Roman historian Suetonius (Gaius Suetonius Tranquill, c. 70 - c. 140) reports the circumstances of the birth of this phrase: once the grammarian Pomponius Markell noted a linguistic error in the speech of the emperor Tiberius. But the lawyer Atey Kapiton, who was at the same time, declared that if the expression used by Tiberius does not meet the norms of Latin speech, then from now on it will itself become the norm, because the emperor said so. To which the grammarian Pomponius resolutely objected, referring to Tiberius himself: "He is mistaken, because you, Caesar (the usual form of addressing the emperor in Rome after Julius Caesar), can give citizenship rights to people, but not to words."

Random phraseology:

Straight, rude, old-fashioned.

Meaning:

The phrase is a symbol of rude, shameless flattery (iron.). It is also used as a playful preamble, softening some critical remark.

Origin:

From the play "The Naked King" (1934) by the Soviet playwright Yevgeny Lvovich Schwartz (1896-1958), the words of the first minister, who addresses the monarch: "- Your Majesty! You know that I am an honest old man, a straight old man. I directly tell the truth in eyes, even if it is unpleasant ... Let me tell you directly, rudely, in an old man's way: you are a great man, sovereign! - adds: - Forgive me my unbridledness - you are a giant! Luminary!

Artificial leather for touch emulation 15.04.2024

In a modern technology world where distance is becoming increasingly commonplace, maintaining connection and a sense of closeness is important. Recent developments in artificial skin by German scientists from Saarland University represent a new era in virtual interactions. German researchers from Saarland University have developed ultra-thin films that can transmit the sensation of touch over a distance. This cutting-edge technology provides new opportunities for virtual communication, especially for those who find themselves far from their loved ones. The ultra-thin films developed by the researchers, just 50 micrometers thick, can be integrated into textiles and worn like a second skin. These films act as sensors that recognize tactile signals from mom or dad, and as actuators that transmit these movements to the baby. Parents' touch to the fabric activates sensors that react to pressure and deform the ultra-thin film. This ... >>

Petgugu Global cat litter 15.04.2024

Taking care of pets can often be a challenge, especially when it comes to keeping your home clean. A new interesting solution from the Petgugu Global startup has been presented, which will make life easier for cat owners and help them keep their home perfectly clean and tidy. Startup Petgugu Global has unveiled a unique cat toilet that can automatically flush feces, keeping your home clean and fresh. This innovative device is equipped with various smart sensors that monitor your pet's toilet activity and activate to automatically clean after use. The device connects to the sewer system and ensures efficient waste removal without the need for intervention from the owner. Additionally, the toilet has a large flushable storage capacity, making it ideal for multi-cat households. The Petgugu cat litter bowl is designed for use with water-soluble litters and offers a range of additional ... >>

The attractiveness of caring men 14.04.2024

The stereotype that women prefer "bad boys" has long been widespread. However, recent research conducted by British scientists from Monash University offers a new perspective on this issue. They looked at how women responded to men's emotional responsibility and willingness to help others. The study's findings could change our understanding of what makes men attractive to women. A study conducted by scientists from Monash University leads to new findings about men's attractiveness to women. In the experiment, women were shown photographs of men with brief stories about their behavior in various situations, including their reaction to an encounter with a homeless person. Some of the men ignored the homeless man, while others helped him, such as buying him food. A study found that men who showed empathy and kindness were more attractive to women compared to men who showed empathy and kindness. ... >>

Production of cell membranes 07.10.2013

Scientists at the Scripps Research Institute (TSRI) have created a programmable platform for making synthetic cell membranes.

The cell wall is one of the most complex elements of the cell structure. Cell membranes are involved in every aspect of a cell's biological function. In particular, the membrane participates in evolution by separating the biochemical activity of the cell, and is also the largest and most complex structure that cells synthesize.

To understand the many biochemical roles of cell membranes, scientists need synthetic models of these same membranes. In addition, a promising direction - the manufacture of artificial organisms - requires a technology that allows the manufacture of cell membranes with various functions. However, until now, the creation of a cell membrane in which the “stuffing” of a living microorganism can be placed has been a very difficult task.

Fortunately, scientists have found a way to "stamp" cell walls, which opens up completely new possibilities in bioengineering. New computer-controlled microfluidic circuits make it possible to assemble synthetic cells not only from lipids taken from natural microorganisms. The new technology allows you to adjust the membrane, change its permeability, stability, biochemical functions. In the future, this will allow the creation of specialized artificial microorganisms, which, for example, will first purify water from oil, and then dissolve themselves. Such synthetic life can be used in a wide variety of areas, such as the production of fuels, medicines, food, oxygen in spacecraft and many others.

The new technology is based on a microfluidic device that consists of microscopic cups that capture one tiny drop of water. The drops float in a bath of oil and lipids that make up cell membranes. The captured droplets serve as the basis for creating a set of lipid layers. It's like painting an object with multiple layers of paint.

The discovery will make it possible to create even very complex multilayer synthetic membranes with a diverse set of functions.
