Protein from algae, sugar and light

10.08.2023

With the impact of sustainability on cutting-edge food technology, Brevel is moving forward by developing alternative protein sources using microalgae, sugar and powerful light. A novel alternative protein with neutral taste and excellent performance is preparing to enter the market, overcoming traditional challenges in cost, quality and sustainability.

The first products using Brevel's alternative protein are planned for release as early as 2024. The company's research and development has resulted in an innovative technology that combines sugar-based microalgae fermentation with industrial-scale intense light exposure. The result is a tasty and versatile protein that is offered at an affordable price, competing with traditional protein sources such as peas and soy.

This innovative protein can be used to create quality plant-based products such as milk or eggs without losing the natural flavor. What's more, Brevel's Alternative Protein helps improve the nutritional profile of products, making them more balanced and nutritious.

Experts are confident that microalgae will soon become the most affordable and effective source of vegetable protein. This is not only an ethical decision to exclude animals from the food chain, but also sustainable given that microalgae production is more efficient in terms of resource use such as land, water, energy and reduces greenhouse gas emissions.

Brevel is now moving pilot production to a commercial level with production capacities up to 500 liters using an innovative fermentation and lighting system. By 2026, it is planned to increase production capacity to 900 thousand liters, giving hope for a more sustainable and nutritious future for the food industry.

The existence of an entropy rule for quantum entanglement has been proven 09.05.2024

Quantum mechanics continues to amaze us with its mysterious phenomena and unexpected discoveries. Recently, Bartosz Regula from the RIKEN Center for Quantum Computing and Ludovico Lamy from the University of Amsterdam presented a new discovery that concerns quantum entanglement and its relation to entropy. Quantum entanglement plays an important role in modern quantum information science and technology. However, the complexity of its structure makes understanding and managing it challenging. Regulus and Lamy's discovery shows that quantum entanglement follows an entropy rule similar to that for classical systems. This discovery opens new perspectives in the field of quantum information science and technology, deepening our understanding of quantum entanglement and its connection to thermodynamics. The results of the study indicate the possibility of reversibility of entanglement transformations, which could greatly simplify their use in various quantum technologies. Opening a new rule ... >>

Energy from space for Starship 08.05.2024

Producing solar energy in space is becoming more feasible with the advent of new technologies and the development of space programs. The head of the startup Virtus Solis shared his vision of using SpaceX's Starship to create orbital power plants capable of powering the Earth. Startup Virtus Solis has unveiled an ambitious project to create orbital power plants using SpaceX's Starship. This idea could significantly change the field of solar energy production, making it more accessible and cheaper. The core of the startup's plan is to reduce the cost of launching satellites into space using Starship. This technological breakthrough is expected to make solar energy production in space more competitive with traditional energy sources. Virtual Solis plans to build large photovoltaic panels in orbit, using Starship to deliver the necessary equipment. However, one of the key challenges ... >>

New method for creating powerful batteries 08.05.2024

With the development of technology and the expanding use of electronics, the issue of creating efficient and safe energy sources is becoming increasingly urgent. Researchers at the University of Queensland have unveiled a new approach to creating high-power zinc-based batteries that could change the landscape of the energy industry. One of the main problems with traditional water-based rechargeable batteries was their low voltage, which limited their use in modern devices. But thanks to a new method developed by scientists, this drawback has been successfully overcome. As part of their research, scientists turned to a special organic compound - catechol. It turned out to be an important component that can improve battery stability and increase its efficiency. This approach has led to a significant increase in the voltage of zinc-ion batteries, making them more competitive. According to scientists, such batteries have several advantages. They have b ... >>

Alcohol content of warm beer 07.05.2024

Beer, as one of the most common alcoholic drinks, has its own unique taste, which can change depending on the temperature of consumption. A new study by an international team of scientists has found that beer temperature has a significant impact on the perception of alcoholic taste. The study, led by materials scientist Lei Jiang, found that at different temperatures, ethanol and water molecules form different types of clusters, which affects the perception of alcoholic taste. At low temperatures, more pyramid-like clusters form, which reduces the pungency of the "ethanol" taste and makes the drink taste less alcoholic. On the contrary, as the temperature increases, the clusters become more chain-like, resulting in a more pronounced alcoholic taste. This explains why the taste of some alcoholic drinks, such as baijiu, can change depending on temperature. The data obtained opens up new prospects for beverage manufacturers, ... >>

No differences found between male and female brains 10.12.2015

Comparing the structure of the brain of men and women, scientists have not found significant differences between the sexes. It turned out that brain activity is determined by a set of both traits in very different proportions.

In the middle of the 100th century, scientists assured that they were able to determine the sex of a person only by the image of his brain. This was partly true in relation to the mass of the organ: the male brain is on average 150x2850 grams heavier than the female. However, this parameter may depend on other physical characteristics of the organism. At the same time, there is no direct connection between the mass of the brain and the mental abilities of an individual. The heaviest brain - XNUMX g - was found in a person who suffered from epilepsy and idiocy.

Recently, a team of researchers from Tel Aviv University, led by Daphna Joel, conducted a comparative analysis of the brains of 1400 people of both sexes. Using magnetic resonance imaging, scientists measured the volume of gray and white matter. In addition, based on the data of diffusion spectral tomography, diagrams of the distribution of nerve fibers (white matter) throughout the brain were drawn up.

In the course of scientific work, several structural differences were found between men and women - for example, in the hippocampus. This part of the limbic system is involved in the mechanisms of emotion formation, memory consolidation, and attention retention. Although, on average, the left hippocampus in men is larger than in women, some examples broke this rule: in a number of men, compared to women, the left hippocampus was smaller or comparable in size.

After compiling a list of characteristic "male" and "female" sites by analogy with the hippocampus, scientists noticed a large number of such "exceptions": from 23 to 53% of the samples had at least one "male" and one "female" site. At the same time, less than 8% of people had completely "female" or completely "male" features, and all the rest had both male and female characteristics of the brain in different proportions.

Scientists believe that this allows us to take a fresh look at the widespread opinion about sex differences at the level of brain activity. In their opinion, "female emotionality" or "male sanity" are stereotypes imposed by society.
