Not so long ago, relatively inexpensive miniature piezoceramic sound emitters with a built-in generator appeared on sale, which were used as tone sound annunciators. Connecting to a power source with just two wires, maintaining performance at a voltage of less than a volt, consuming a current of only a few milliamps at a rated voltage, these devices emit a very loud, piercing sound with a frequency of 1000 ... 3500 Hz.

At the first time of operation of such emitters, it seemed that they were perfection itself and that there was no need to modify anything in them. But the moment came when one of the emitters, namely HPA24AX (case diameter 24 mm, thickness 9 mm), was opened.

Refinement of the NPA24AX sound emitter

As expected, it was assembled according to an extremely simple oscillator circuit (see figure), consisting of several SMD elements: resistors R1-R3, transistor VT1 and the piezoelectric resonator itself - the sound emitter ZQ1. The numbering of elements is conditional. A similar scheme has long been used, for example, in the calling nodes of the simplest wired telephones.

After connecting to the emitter in accordance with the polarity of the 10 V DC voltage source indicated on its case, the operating modes of the transistor VT1 were determined using an oscilloscope. It turned out that the amplitude of the voltage amplitude of the emitter-collector does not exceed 8 V, and the emitter-base - +0.6 ... -3.5 V.

The installation of a silicon diode transistor VD1 between the base and the emitter made it possible to reduce the voltage amplitude at the base to 1,3 V and simultaneously increase the emitter-collector voltage amplitude to 10 V. The volume of the emitter increased markedly, and the stability of the pulse amplitude also increased.

If you have such or a similar emitter, you can open it with a thin screwdriver, with which you can carefully squeeze out the printed circuit board through a special hole in the side wall. If the board from the side of installation into the case is filled with epoxy glue, then experiments and refinement should be refrained from.

Diode - any of the series KD102, KD103, KD512 or other small-sized. If there is enough free space in the case, you can install the missing blocking ceramic capacitor with a capacity of 0,047 ... 0,47 μF inside it, for which contact pads are provided on the printed circuit board of the HPA24AX. The parts installed on the board after its placement in the case should not come into contact with the piezoelectric element.

Traffic noise delays the growth of chicks 06.05.2024

The sounds that surround us in modern cities are becoming increasingly piercing. However, few people think about how this noise affects the animal world, especially such delicate creatures as chicks that have not yet hatched from their eggs. Recent research is shedding light on this issue, indicating serious consequences for their development and survival. Scientists have found that exposure of zebra diamondback chicks to traffic noise can cause serious disruption to their development. Experiments have shown that noise pollution can significantly delay their hatching, and those chicks that do emerge face a number of health-promoting problems. The researchers also found that the negative effects of noise pollution extend into the adult birds. Reduced chances of reproduction and decreased fertility indicate the long-term effects that traffic noise has on wildlife. The study results highlight the need ... >>

A New Way to Control and Manipulate Optical Signals 05.05.2024

The modern world of science and technology is developing rapidly, and every day new methods and technologies appear that open up new prospects for us in various fields. One such innovation is the development by German scientists of a new way to control optical signals, which could lead to significant progress in the field of photonics. Recent research has allowed German scientists to create a tunable waveplate inside a fused silica waveguide. This method, based on the use of a liquid crystal layer, allows one to effectively change the polarization of light passing through a waveguide. This technological breakthrough opens up new prospects for the development of compact and efficient photonic devices capable of processing large volumes of data. The electro-optical control of polarization provided by the new method could provide the basis for a new class of integrated photonic devices. This opens up great opportunities for ... >>

U-shaped computer keyboard 25.06.2003

The American company SafeType has released an original ergonomic keyboard, which is designed to save computer users from the inconvenience of traditional text input devices.

The new keyboard has a U-shape. On the two side panels are alphanumeric and function keys. In this case, the keys that on a conventional keyboard fall under the left hand are on the left panel, and under the right hand - on the right. On the horizontal part of the keyboard there are control keys, multimedia keys, cursor control and an additional numeric keypad.

Such an unusual keyboard configuration is due to the fact that with the vertical arrangement of the keys, the forearms are in the so-called neutral position (thumbs pointing up), in which the wrists practically do not strain. This is especially noticeable when working for a long time. However, such a keyboard also has serious drawbacks. To work with it, you need to know the method of touch typing, since looking at the keyboard is very uncomfortable.

The last two rows of keys are practically impossible to see without turning your head. Therefore, the keyboard is equipped with two mirrors that reflect these keys, and the inscriptions on the keys themselves are written in a mirror version.
