Phraseologism: facade empire.

Meaning: Showy shine.

Origin: From French: "Un empire de facades". From the book "Russia in 1839" (publ. 1843) by the French writer Marquis Astolphe de Custine (1790-1857), who visited Russia in 1839 and, impressed by this trip, wrote a book in which he spoke about the ostentatious splendor that imperial Russia tried to cover up its internal disorder. A. I. Herzen wrote about Custine's book in his diary (1843): "He grasped best of all the artificiality that strikes at every turn, and the boasting of those elements of European life that we only have to show. There are expressions of amazing fidelity: " Un empire de facades..." This expression soon became a common characteristic of imperial Russia. For example, it was used by the writer Alexander Dumas père (1803-1862), who also visited Russia and left memories of this journey in eight volumes under the general title "From Paris to Astrakhan" ("De Paris a Astrakan"), where he wrote: "Russia is a big facade. As for what is behind it, no one is doing it.
