The Sorcerer's Apprentice

Johann Wolfgang Goethe
Johann Wolfgang Goethe

Phraseologism: The Sorcerer's Apprentice.

Meaning: About a half-educated specialist who can start a certain process, bring to life certain forces, but is unable to cope with them, direct them to the desired goal (ironic, disapproved).

Origin: From German: "Der Zauberlehrling". The name of the ballad of the German poet and scientist Johann Wolfgang Goethe (1749-1832), the plot of which the writer borrowed from the ancient Greek philosopher and satirist Lucian (II century). In both cases, the plot is similar: a magician's apprentice, having spied on some of the rites of his teacher, but not understanding their essence, brings to life some dark forces. But this is the only thing he can do: he does not know how to send them back, nor how to deal with them, and eventually dies.

Random phraseology:

Up the stairs leading down.

Meaning:

About actions that at first glance contribute to something, changing the situation for the better, but in fact only worsen the situation.

Origin:

The title of the novel (1961) is about a school written by the American writer Bel Kaufman (b. 1911), granddaughter of the famous Jewish writer Sholom Aleichem (pseudonym of Sholom Nokhumovich Rabinovich, 1859-1916). B. Kaufman lived in Odessa until the revolution of 1917, after which she moved to the USA with her family. The idea to name her novel exactly like that was born in her thanks to the following episode: once the administrator of the school where B. Kaufman taught at that time made a memorandum about the behavior of one of the students: "I was detained for violating the rules: I went up the stairs leading down" . Although at first glance this phrase sounds absurd, it is based on one, quite practical consideration. In American schools, in order to avoid crowds and, accordingly, childhood injuries, one staircase was only allowed to go up, while others were only allowed to go down.

Artificial leather for touch emulation 15.04.2024

In a modern technology world where distance is becoming increasingly commonplace, maintaining connection and a sense of closeness is important. Recent developments in artificial skin by German scientists from Saarland University represent a new era in virtual interactions. German researchers from Saarland University have developed ultra-thin films that can transmit the sensation of touch over a distance. This cutting-edge technology provides new opportunities for virtual communication, especially for those who find themselves far from their loved ones. The ultra-thin films developed by the researchers, just 50 micrometers thick, can be integrated into textiles and worn like a second skin. These films act as sensors that recognize tactile signals from mom or dad, and as actuators that transmit these movements to the baby. Parents' touch to the fabric activates sensors that react to pressure and deform the ultra-thin film. This ... >>

The attractiveness of caring men 14.04.2024

The stereotype that women prefer "bad boys" has long been widespread. However, recent research conducted by British scientists from Monash University offers a new perspective on this issue. They looked at how women responded to men's emotional responsibility and willingness to help others. The study's findings could change our understanding of what makes men attractive to women. A study conducted by scientists from Monash University leads to new findings about men's attractiveness to women. In the experiment, women were shown photographs of men with brief stories about their behavior in various situations, including their reaction to an encounter with a homeless person. Some of the men ignored the homeless man, while others helped him, such as buying him food. A study found that men who showed empathy and kindness were more attractive to women compared to men who showed empathy and kindness. ... >>

How many dinosaurs have not yet been discovered 06.10.2005

For 150 years of studying fossils until 1990, paleontologists discovered 285 genera of these reptiles (a genus is a group of related and similar species, although in many genera there is only one species - if the newly discovered animal "does not fit" into any of the known genera).

Since then, says American paleontologist Peter Dodson, who conducted a census of now known pangolins, another 222 genera have been discovered. The rate of discovery of new dinosaurs is increasing. Until 1, on average, 969 new genera were found over 10 years. Since 12 - about a hundred in 1990 years. There are especially many new finds in Argentina and China.

Based on the rate at which new dinosaurs were discovered, Dodson calculated that 73% of dinosaur genera that have ever lived have not yet been discovered. This means that almost two thousand finds await paleontologists.
