Three whales

Winged words
Winged words

Phraseologism: Three whales.

Meaning: The main, fundamental, basic foundations of something (jokingly-ironic).

Origin: From ancient cosmogonic legends. In ancient Russian literature, the "Conversation of the Three Hierarchs" and the "Jerusalem Conversation" are devoted to questions of the universe, consisting of a series of questions and answers. Here is how, for example, in the "Jerusalem Conversation" King David and King Volot Volotovich talk about the universe. To David's question: "On what does the earth stand?" - Volot replies: "The earth stands on eighty whales-fishes smaller and on three large fishes" (Porfiryev I. History of Russian Literature. Part 1. Kazan, 1897).

Random phraseology:

Elegant as a piano.

Meaning:

About someone dressed emphatically smartly, with a claim to elegance (jokingly ironic).

Origin:

From the comic song "Dogs barked loudly ..." (1958), written by writer and screenwriter Gennady Fedorovich Shpalikov (1937-1974): "Dogs barked loudly // Into the foggy distance... // I came to you in a tailcoat, / / Elegant as a piano."

Artificial leather for touch emulation 15.04.2024

In a modern technology world where distance is becoming increasingly commonplace, maintaining connection and a sense of closeness is important. Recent developments in artificial skin by German scientists from Saarland University represent a new era in virtual interactions. German researchers from Saarland University have developed ultra-thin films that can transmit the sensation of touch over a distance. This cutting-edge technology provides new opportunities for virtual communication, especially for those who find themselves far from their loved ones. The ultra-thin films developed by the researchers, just 50 micrometers thick, can be integrated into textiles and worn like a second skin. These films act as sensors that recognize tactile signals from mom or dad, and as actuators that transmit these movements to the baby. Parents' touch to the fabric activates sensors that react to pressure and deform the ultra-thin film. This ... >>

The attractiveness of caring men 14.04.2024

The stereotype that women prefer "bad boys" has long been widespread. However, recent research conducted by British scientists from Monash University offers a new perspective on this issue. They looked at how women responded to men's emotional responsibility and willingness to help others. The study's findings could change our understanding of what makes men attractive to women. A study conducted by scientists from Monash University leads to new findings about men's attractiveness to women. In the experiment, women were shown photographs of men with brief stories about their behavior in various situations, including their reaction to an encounter with a homeless person. Some of the men ignored the homeless man, while others helped him, such as buying him food. Synthesized natural pain reliever 06.02.2016

Morphine as a drug that has an analgesic effect has been known for a long time. Despite its powerful analgesic properties, the use of morphine is limited because it causes respiratory depression and addiction. The latter circumstance forced scientists at Tulane University in New Orleans (USA) to look for an alternative drug that does not cause addiction, and they found it in the form of endomorphine.

Endomorphins are two endogenous opioid peptides that are formed in the human body and play an important role in the formation of motivations, emotions, reactions to stress and pain, and in the control of food intake. Synthesized endomorphine acts on the same opioid receptor as morphine. Therefore, to study the safety and effectiveness, the researchers conducted a series of experiments on rats, which were given both of these substances in equally strong doses. In rats that were injected with morphine, motor skills and breathing were significantly impaired, while endomorphine did not cause such an effect. In addition, the analgesic effects of endomorphine were similar or stronger than those of morphine.

As for dependence, experiments showed that rats spent more time in the compartment where they were injected with morphine and made more efforts to get the next portion of the substance than rats that were given endomorphine. Tests like these reflect the potential for addiction in people.

In addition, endomorphine did not contribute to the activation of glial cells in the spinal cord in the experiments. This effect is usually inherent in morphine and contributes to the development of addiction and abuse of substances. The researchers expect to begin clinical trials within the next two years.
