Watch like a ram at a new gate

Proverbs and sayings
Proverbs and sayings

Phraseologism: Watch like a ram at a new gate.

Meaning: Stupidly, with bewilderment, not understanding anything, in confusion, it is stupid to look at someone for something (simple).

Origin: The expression arose as a result of the deployment of a stable expression to look like a ram. Phraseological dictionaries, explaining the origin of this turnover, indicate: "a ram is considered such a stupid animal that it allegedly does not recognize its yard if new gates are set, and therefore looks at them for a long time, not daring to enter."

Random phraseology:

You won, Galilean!

Meaning:

It is used as a playfully ironic form of admitting oneself defeated.

Origin:

According to Christian tradition, the dying cry of the Roman emperor (331-363) Julian the Apostate, addressed to Jesus Christ. Julian abandoned Christianity, which had already been accepted as the state religion earlier (calling it contemptuously "Galileanism" - after the name of the province of Galilee, where Jesus came from) and made an attempt to return to traditional Roman polytheism. The emperor even wrote several polemical writings directed against the new religion, which aroused hatred for him from the Christians, who called Julian an "apostate." And later, historians of the Christian Church, in particular Theodoret (c. 390-458), created a legend that Julian, mortally wounded in a battle with the Persians, exclaimed before his death: "You won, Galilean!" In fact, as historians point out, the emperor Julian the Apostate remained a staunch opponent of the new religion and a supporter of the Roman pagan cult until the end of his days. The phrase is better known thanks to A. I. Herzen, who used it in a well-known article dedicated to Alexander II in connection with the upcoming liberation of the peasants from serfdom. The article was published in A. I. Herzen's magazine The Bell (1858, No. 9), published in London, under the heading "Three Years Later".

Artificial leather for touch emulation 15.04.2024

In a modern technology world where distance is becoming increasingly commonplace, maintaining connection and a sense of closeness is important. Recent developments in artificial skin by German scientists from Saarland University represent a new era in virtual interactions. German researchers from Saarland University have developed ultra-thin films that can transmit the sensation of touch over a distance. This cutting-edge technology provides new opportunities for virtual communication, especially for those who find themselves far from their loved ones. The ultra-thin films developed by the researchers, just 50 micrometers thick, can be integrated into textiles and worn like a second skin. These films act as sensors that recognize tactile signals from mom or dad, and as actuators that transmit these movements to the baby. Parents' touch to the fabric activates sensors that react to pressure and deform the ultra-thin film. This ... >>

Petgugu Global cat litter 15.04.2024

Taking care of pets can often be a challenge, especially when it comes to keeping your home clean. A new interesting solution from the Petgugu Global startup has been presented, which will make life easier for cat owners and help them keep their home perfectly clean and tidy. Startup Petgugu Global has unveiled a unique cat toilet that can automatically flush feces, keeping your home clean and fresh. This innovative device is equipped with various smart sensors that monitor your pet's toilet activity and activate to automatically clean after use. The device connects to the sewer system and ensures efficient waste removal without the need for intervention from the owner. Additionally, the toilet has a large flushable storage capacity, making it ideal for multi-cat households. The Petgugu cat litter bowl is designed for use with water-soluble litters and offers a range of additional ... >>

The attractiveness of caring men 14.04.2024

The stereotype that women prefer "bad boys" has long been widespread. However, recent research conducted by British scientists from Monash University offers a new perspective on this issue. They looked at how women responded to men's emotional responsibility and willingness to help others. The study's findings could change our understanding of what makes men attractive to women. A study conducted by scientists from Monash University leads to new findings about men's attractiveness to women. In the experiment, women were shown photographs of men with brief stories about their behavior in various situations, including their reaction to an encounter with a homeless person. Some of the men ignored the homeless man, while others helped him, such as buying him food. A study found that men who showed empathy and kindness were more attractive to women compared to men who showed empathy and kindness. ... >>

US military looking for aliens 07.08.2012

The US National Science Foundation for Technology Financing allocated $1,2 million to the Rochester Institute of Technology (RIT) to develop a new type of infrared array with a resolution of 4000x4000 pixels. These matrices are necessary for the further development of IR telescopes, which, along with fundamental research, are engaged in the search for exoplanets and extraterrestrial life. The new family of IR detectors will use silicon-based growth technology developed by Raytheon for the military. Thus, military technologies will help to significantly expand the possibilities of modern astronomy.

Today, high-resolution infrared sensors are so expensive that they are only installed on huge telescopes like the Keck or the VLT. Today, a typical sensor with a resolution of 2048x2048 pixels costs about 350-500 thousand dollars, which is a significant part of the cost of most modern telescopes. A new type of sensor grown on a silicon substrate will cost much less and will become the basis of future ground-based telescopes with mirrors 30 m in diameter that are optimal from many points of view.

So far, various expensive silicon substitutes have been used to produce large IR matrices. They are used because the atoms in the silicon crystal are located closer to each other than in other materials sensitive to the IR range. Because of this, defects in the silicon crystal lattice generate interference that is unacceptable for an astronomical instrument. Raytheon has developed a technology for "perfect" deposition of a photosensitive material on a silicon substrate in a vacuum. In this case, the growth of the future IR sensor is carried out using the widely used technology of molecular beam epitaxy.

In the near future, RIT and Raytheon specialists will design and manufacture samples of IR sensors with a resolution of 1024x1024 and 2048x2048 pixels using the new technology. Moreover, the new technology makes it possible to manufacture large-area IR matrices with a resolution of up to 14000x14000 pixels. The new technology is considered so promising that it is predicted to be widely used in the next 20 years, and astronomers will finally be able to study distant exoplanets in much more detail and, possibly, find extraterrestrial life.

The Foundation also funded the development of a housing that isolates the sensor from extraneous light and thermal radiation. The double-walled enclosure must be cooled down to 60 degrees Kelvin to eliminate their influence on the operation of the device.
