City It is a large frozen drop that falls during severe thunderstorms where snow and rain can coexist in a central airflow. As the snowflakes fall, the liquid water droplets freeze to form ice balls that will increase in number as the number of droplets increases. Upon reaching the bottom of the cloud, some of the ice balls are returned by ascending air currents to the top of the thundercloud.

Since the ice balls are again falling through the cloud, it is natural to assume. that they will increase in size a little. Therefore, the stronger the air flow, the more times the hailstones repeat this cycle, the larger and heavier they will be. When the hailstones become too heavy to be held by air currents, they fall to the ground as precipitation. When the hailstones reach the ground, they are ice floes, because the air temperature is not enough for them to melt before reaching the ground.

The type, structure and size of hailstones are extremely diverse. Hail is spherical or irregularly shaped ice particles (hailstones) ranging in size from a millimeter to several centimeters. There are hailstones measuring 130 mm and weighing about 1 kg. Hailstones consist of a series of layers of transparent ice at least 1 mm thick, alternating with translucent layers. In meteorology, hail is distinguished from snow pellets - ice opaque white grains, ranging in size from 2 to 5 mm, fragile and easily crushed. Also known are precipitation such as freezing rain, which should not be confused with hail.

Hail falls, as a rule, in the warm season from powerful cumulonimbus clouds, strongly developed upwards, usually during showers and thunderstorms. The hail layer is sometimes several centimeters thick. Duration of loss: from several minutes to half an hour, most often 5-10 minutes, and very rarely - about 1 hour or more. Most of the hail falls during the summer and during the day. Hail at night is a very rare occurrence.

Energy from space for Starship 08.05.2024

Producing solar energy in space is becoming more feasible with the advent of new technologies and the development of space programs. The head of the startup Virtus Solis shared his vision of using SpaceX's Starship to create orbital power plants capable of powering the Earth. Startup Virtus Solis has unveiled an ambitious project to create orbital power plants using SpaceX's Starship. This idea could significantly change the field of solar energy production, making it more accessible and cheaper. The core of the startup's plan is to reduce the cost of launching satellites into space using Starship. This technological breakthrough is expected to make solar energy production in space more competitive with traditional energy sources. Virtual Solis plans to build large photovoltaic panels in orbit, using Starship to deliver the necessary equipment. However, one of the key challenges ... >>

New method for creating powerful batteries 08.05.2024

With the development of technology and the expanding use of electronics, the issue of creating efficient and safe energy sources is becoming increasingly urgent. Researchers at the University of Queensland have unveiled a new approach to creating high-power zinc-based batteries that could change the landscape of the energy industry. One of the main problems with traditional water-based rechargeable batteries was their low voltage, which limited their use in modern devices. But thanks to a new method developed by scientists, this drawback has been successfully overcome. As part of their research, scientists turned to a special organic compound - catechol. It turned out to be an important component that can improve battery stability and increase its efficiency. This approach has led to a significant increase in the voltage of zinc-ion batteries, making them more competitive. According to scientists, such batteries have several advantages. They have b ... >>

Alcohol content of warm beer 07.05.2024

Beer, as one of the most common alcoholic drinks, has its own unique taste, which can change depending on the temperature of consumption. A new study by an international team of scientists has found that beer temperature has a significant impact on the perception of alcoholic taste. The study, led by materials scientist Lei Jiang, found that at different temperatures, ethanol and water molecules form different types of clusters, which affects the perception of alcoholic taste. At low temperatures, more pyramid-like clusters form, which reduces the pungency of the "ethanol" taste and makes the drink taste less alcoholic. On the contrary, as the temperature increases, the clusters become more chain-like, resulting in a more pronounced alcoholic taste. This explains why the taste of some alcoholic drinks, such as baijiu, can change depending on temperature. The data obtained opens up new prospects for beverage manufacturers, ... >>

Potato bacterium antibiotic 13.10.2022

British scientists have managed to obtain a broad-spectrum antibiotic from a potato bacterium.

We are talking about a microorganism called Dickeya solani, first discovered 15 years ago. It is he who is responsible for the so-called wet rot on potatoes, which everyone has seen. This disease harms agriculture, but helped scientists from the University of Cambridge (UK) discover a new broad-spectrum antibiotic.

Previously, microbiologists have already found that the bacterium D. solani has the ability to secrete an antibiotic, but another one is oocidin A. It has a high activity against many fungal infections in plants.

It turned out that the bacterium can secrete another antibiotic - solanimicin. Scientists got it when they inhibited the genes responsible for the production of oocin A. Despite this inhibition, D. solani continued to retain antifungal activity.

The researchers asked why this was so and learned about the bacterium's "backup" defense. In addition to isolating the antibiotic itself, the authors of the work identified a cluster of genes encoding the proteins that make up the compound.

Scientists have also found that the microorganism spends this type of antibiotic sparingly - for example, solanimycin genes are activated by an acidic environment. In the future, biologists hope to extract from it a drug that would be effective in protecting plants, and in the future, people from pathogens.

In the laboratory, researchers have already tested the antibiotic against Candida albicans and it is effective. This type of fungus exists naturally in the body, but it can also trigger dangerous infections.
