Buridan's donkey

Jean Buridan
Jean Buridan

Phraseologism: Buridan's donkey.

Meaning: About an extremely indecisive person, hesitating in the choice between two equivalent desires, two equivalent decisions (book).

Origin: The expression is attributed to the French scholastic philosopher of the XIV century. J. Buridan, who argued that the actions of living beings do not depend on their will, but solely on external causes. He confirmed his idea with the example of a donkey, which must die of hunger if two armfuls of hay are at an equal distance from it, since with absolute free will it will not be able to choose which armful to eat first.

Random phraseology:

All over Ivanovskaya (shouting, yelling, roaring).

Meaning:

Very loud, with all your might.

Origin:

Ivanovskaya is the name of the square in the Moscow Kremlin where the Ivan the Great Bell Tower stands. There are several versions of the origin of the phraseological unit: 1) on Ivanovskaya in the old days, royal decrees were read aloud, in a loud voice, 2) on Ivanovskaya Square, clerks were also sometimes punished for bribes and extortion, they were mercilessly beaten with whips and batogs, which is why they shouted "in all Ivanovskaya" . The emergence of turnover is also associated with the Ivan the Great Bell Tower itself: ringing all Ivanovskaya - all the bells of the Ivan the Great Bell Tower.

Artificial leather for touch emulation 15.04.2024

In a modern technology world where distance is becoming increasingly commonplace, maintaining connection and a sense of closeness is important. Recent developments in artificial skin by German scientists from Saarland University represent a new era in virtual interactions. German researchers from Saarland University have developed ultra-thin films that can transmit the sensation of touch over a distance. This cutting-edge technology provides new opportunities for virtual communication, especially for those who find themselves far from their loved ones. The ultra-thin films developed by the researchers, just 50 micrometers thick, can be integrated into textiles and worn like a second skin. These films act as sensors that recognize tactile signals from mom or dad, and as actuators that transmit these movements to the baby. Parents' touch to the fabric activates sensors that react to pressure and deform the ultra-thin film. This ... >>
