Revolution devours its children

Georges Jacques Danton
Georges Jacques Danton

Phraseologism: The revolution devours its children.

Meaning: The logic of post-revolutionary events is such that the struggle between the revolutionaries themselves becomes inevitable, and usually the people whom the revolution elevates to the pinnacle of state power are the first to die.

Origin: Words spoken before the execution by the famous figure of the French Revolution, Georges Jacques Danton (1759-1794). He became one of the many victims who died from recent associates. In 1794, the Jacobins issued a series of decrees that marked the beginning of the "great terror", which was directed against all "enemies of the people", against those who in one way or another "assisted the enemies of France", tried to "violate the purity and strength of revolutionary principles" etc. The victims of repressions were both nobles, royalists, and the revolutionaries themselves, who for one reason or another were declared "enemies of the people." So, J. Danton, C. Desmoulins and their like-minded people, who opposed the extremes of terror, for a truce with an external enemy (to give the country a respite), were given the nickname "indulgent", accused of assisting the enemies of the revolution and, after a short trial, were executed by guillotine 5 April 1794 Standing in front of the revolutionary tribunal, J. Danton bitterly threw to its members: "It was I who ordered the establishment of your vile tribunal - God and people forgive me!"

Random phraseology:

The state is me.

Meaning:

To characterize persons occupying a leading position in the country and showing gross arbitrariness in their activities.

Origin:

The expression is attributed to the French king (1643-1715) Louis XIV, who allegedly said so in a meeting of parliament in 1655 (Dulaure, Histoire civile, physique et morale de Paris, 1853, p. 387). However, the belonging of this phrase to Louis XIV is refuted by historians. From the minutes of the said session of parliament published by Alexandre Roger, which was kept in the secret state archive, it is clear that the king did not utter this phrase (Roger Alexandre, Le Mshee de la conversation, Paris, 1901, p. 73). The magazine "Revue Britan-nique" (May, 1851) attributes this phrase to the English Queen (1558-1603) Elizabeth.

Artificial leather for touch emulation 15.04.2024

In a modern technology world where distance is becoming increasingly commonplace, maintaining connection and a sense of closeness is important. Recent developments in artificial skin by German scientists from Saarland University represent a new era in virtual interactions. German researchers from Saarland University have developed ultra-thin films that can transmit the sensation of touch over a distance. This cutting-edge technology provides new opportunities for virtual communication, especially for those who find themselves far from their loved ones. The ultra-thin films developed by the researchers, just 50 micrometers thick, can be integrated into textiles and worn like a second skin. These films act as sensors that recognize tactile signals from mom or dad, and as actuators that transmit these movements to the baby. Parents' touch to the fabric activates sensors that react to pressure and deform the ultra-thin film. This ... >>

The attractiveness of caring men 14.04.2024

The stereotype that women prefer "bad boys" has long been widespread. However, recent research conducted by British scientists from Monash University offers a new perspective on this issue. They looked at how women responded to men's emotional responsibility and willingness to help others. The study's findings could change our understanding of what makes men attractive to women. A study conducted by scientists from Monash University leads to new findings about men's attractiveness to women. In the experiment, women were shown photographs of men with brief stories about their behavior in various situations, including their reaction to an encounter with a homeless person. Some of the men ignored the homeless man, while others helped him, such as buying him food. A study found that men who showed empathy and kindness were more attractive to women compared to men who showed empathy and kindness. ... >>

Micropipette for printer 02.04.2013

Scientists from the Federal Polytechnic School of Lausanne have created a glass nanocapillary with a hole diameter of only a few nanometers. The smallest pipette in the world can be used in ultra-high-precision printing and surgery. In the latter case, doctors will be able to work directly with individual cells.

The invention happened by chance: under the beam of a scanning electron microscope, quartz tubes (capillaries) stretched out and turned into a kind of pipette. This phenomenon is familiar to everyone: if you throw a plastic bottle into a fire, it begins to wrinkle and lose its shape. Something similar happened with glass tubes: the microscope beam caused the accumulation of electrons in the glass. But glass is not a conductor, so the "pandemonium" of electrons caused the glass to heat up, contract, and eventually form the pipette tip.

The process of glass compression is visible on the microscope screen in real time, which allows you to adjust the capillary diameter in the range from 200 nanometers to complete closure. In this way, ultrathin "syringes" or microscopic test tubes can be created. During experiments with an unexpectedly invented technology, scientists managed to make glass capillaries with an internal diameter of 11 nm. In fact, with an initial cost of raw materials of a few cents, it was possible to make a nanochannel worth hundreds of dollars for a microfluidic chip.

Unfortunately, the method of manufacturing glass nanocapillaries using a scanning electron microscope is essentially manual. The technology has yet to be adapted for industrial production, which will take time and investment.
