Be ready! Always ready!

Robert Baden-Powell
Robert Baden-Powell

Phraseologism: Be ready! Always ready!

Meaning: A call to carry out an assignment and, accordingly, an expression of readiness to do this (jokingly ironic).

Origin: From English: Be Prepared! The motto of the scouts, the author of which was the founder of the scouting movement, the English colonel Robert Baden-Powell (1857-1941), who outlined the foundations of this movement in his book Scouting for Boys (1908). Scouting (from the English scout - scout) - a system of out-of-school education of boys and girls (boy scouts and girl scouts) from 7 years to 21 years. Scouts studied nature, the basics of crafts and tourism, received primary military knowledge. In Russia, scout detachments were created in 1909, and soon (1914) the Russian Scout society was founded, the motto of which was Baden-Powell's phrase "Be ready!" and a review to it: "Always ready!" After the Bolsheviks came to power, scout detachments were banned, and instead of them, the All-Union Pioneer Organization was subsequently created, which inherited some attributes of Russian scouts, including their motto with appropriate refinement. In full, the pioneer motto sounded like this: "Be ready to fight for the cause of the Communist Party!" And the review: "Always ready!" These words were accompanied by solemn pioneering events - the presentation of distinctions, reports, rulers, etc. The motto of Colonel Baden-Powell apparently had a Latin source - "Semper paratus" ("Always ready").

Random phraseology:

Karas is an idealist.

Meaning:

About a person who has become a victim of his own, his own illusions (jokingly-iron.).

Origin:

The name of a satirical tale (1884) by Mikhail Evgrafovich Saltykov-Shchedrin (1826-1889), who thus decided to describe the type of idealist public figure. An idealist carp believes in goodness, love, universal happiness and the need for civic feeling. I am sure that the pike will not eat it either - you just need to lay out the whole "truth" to it. And, having met once with a pike, he begins to convince her that all fish should swim freely, live in harmony, live by their own labor, including the pike. And, hoping to finally reason with her, the crucian asks her a question: "Do you know what virtue is?" The pike "gave her mouth open in surprise. She mechanically drew water and, not wanting to swallow the crucian at all, swallowed it." In the collection of satirical essays Well-intentioned Speeches (1872-1876), Saltykov-Shchedrin wrote: "Woe to the crucian carp who doze in ignorance that their providential purpose is to serve as food for pikes, filling the pool of vital foundations."

Artificial leather for touch emulation 15.04.2024

In a modern technology world where distance is becoming increasingly commonplace, maintaining connection and a sense of closeness is important. Recent developments in artificial skin by German scientists from Saarland University represent a new era in virtual interactions. German researchers from Saarland University have developed ultra-thin films that can transmit the sensation of touch over a distance. This cutting-edge technology provides new opportunities for virtual communication, especially for those who find themselves far from their loved ones. The ultra-thin films developed by the researchers, just 50 micrometers thick, can be integrated into textiles and worn like a second skin. These films act as sensors that recognize tactile signals from mom or dad, and as actuators that transmit these movements to the baby. Parents' touch to the fabric activates sensors that react to pressure and deform the ultra-thin film. This ... >>

The attractiveness of caring men 14.04.2024

The stereotype that women prefer "bad boys" has long been widespread. However, recent research conducted by British scientists from Monash University offers a new perspective on this issue. They looked at how women responded to men's emotional responsibility and willingness to help others. The study's findings could change our understanding of what makes men attractive to women. A study conducted by scientists from Monash University leads to new findings about men's attractiveness to women. In the experiment, women were shown photographs of men with brief stories about their behavior in various situations, including their reaction to an encounter with a homeless person. Some of the men ignored the homeless man, while others helped him, such as buying him food. Gold disc 10 gigabytes 14.08.2009

On a regular DVD disc, 4,7 gigabytes of information is placed, on a two-layer one - 8,5, on the recently appeared Blu-ray discs, where information is written and read with shorter wavelength light, - 25-50 gigabytes.

Specialists from the Technological University in Swinburne (Australia) intend to create a disc with a capacity of 1600-10 gigabytes, which will fit up to two thousand movies. Recording on the new disc, the prototype of which is currently being tested, is carried out on gold nanorods embedded in a thin layer of transparent plastic. Since the recording uses a variable wavelength of light and, in addition, recording and reading can be carried out with polarized light with different planes of polarization, much more information is placed on the same area.

It is expected that the industrial production of gold discs will come in five years. True, some experts doubt that home video libraries will live another five years. Probably, we will not store films at home, but if we wish, we will instantly download them from the Internet.
