bird's milk

Aristophanes
Aristophanes

Phraseologism: Bird's milk.

Meaning: Something unheard of, impossible, the ultimate desire.

Origin: There are several versions of the origin of the phraseological unit: 1) from ancient Greek sources. As a proverb meaning something rare and precious, this expression ("gala orniton") is given by Aristophanes, Atheneus, Strabo, Lucian and others, 2) the expression bird's milk has grown into Russian folklore, becoming in it a folk symbol of fabulous abundance. This is an international turnover known to the Slavs, Greeks, Spaniards, Tatars, Hungarians and many others. This expression was also widespread in the ancient world: among the Romans, chicken milk was a symbol of prosperity, and in the comedy of Aristophanes (c. 466-385 BC) "Birds" heroes boast that they have more than enough bird's milk. A long life in Russian folklore and folk speech has left purely national marks on this ancient expression. It, in particular, has acquired a reproachful character: he only lacks bird's milk "he has everything, but he still complains about something." Prove that the circulation of bird's milk in some from modern languages - borrowing from another is almost impossible. This is an ancient universal, 3) the French say: "il est nourri de lait de poule", based on the prejudices of the ancients that chickens can give milk, 4) the expression goes back to the Proto-Slavic foundation.

Random phraseology:

Artificial leather for touch emulation 15.04.2024

In a modern technology world where distance is becoming increasingly commonplace, maintaining connection and a sense of closeness is important. Recent developments in artificial skin by German scientists from Saarland University represent a new era in virtual interactions. German researchers from Saarland University have developed ultra-thin films that can transmit the sensation of touch over a distance. This cutting-edge technology provides new opportunities for virtual communication, especially for those who find themselves far from their loved ones. The ultra-thin films developed by the researchers, just 50 micrometers thick, can be integrated into textiles and worn like a second skin. These films act as sensors that recognize tactile signals from mom or dad, and as actuators that transmit these movements to the baby. Parents' touch to the fabric activates sensors that react to pressure and deform the ultra-thin film. This ... >>

The attractiveness of caring men 14.04.2024

The stereotype that women prefer "bad boys" has long been widespread. However, recent research conducted by British scientists from Monash University offers a new perspective on this issue. They looked at how women responded to men's emotional responsibility and willingness to help others. The study's findings could change our understanding of what makes men attractive to women. A study conducted by scientists from Monash University leads to new findings about men's attractiveness to women. In the experiment, women were shown photographs of men with brief stories about their behavior in various situations, including their reaction to an encounter with a homeless person. Some of the men ignored the homeless man, while others helped him, such as buying him food. A study found that men who showed empathy and kindness were more attractive to women compared to men who showed empathy and kindness. ... >>

Lunar navigation 26.09.2008

Ohio scientists have begun developing a system for orienting astronauts on the moon. When NASA astronauts visit the moon again, which is scheduled for 2020, how will they navigate it? Indeed, on our natural satellite there are no trees, no buildings, in a word, nothing that would allow us to estimate the distances and sizes of objects.

During previous expeditions, this has already led to incidents: the astronauts were heading to the lunar crater and passed almost next to it, not being able to distinguish the details of the lunar relief. On Earth, a global navigation system would help, but there is none on the Moon. Bye.

Professor Ron Lee of Ohio University received a $1,2 million grant to correct this deficiency. In American space circles, this university is known, in particular, for the fact that it developed the orientation system for the Spirit and Opportunity rovers, which brilliantly coped with all their tasks. This experience will be used to create lunar navigation.

“Images taken from orbit will be compared with those taken on the surface of the Moon, and as a result maps of the lunar relief will be compiled. Motion sensors on lunar rovers and the astronauts themselves will allow computers to constantly calculate their coordinates. Signals from the Moon’s satellites, lander and base camps will build for astronauts a picture similar to what the driver sees on his GPS-navigator, thanks to this, the astronaut will not get lost on the moon,” says Ron Lee.
