Artificial leather for touch emulation 15.04.2024

In a modern technology world where distance is becoming increasingly commonplace, maintaining connection and a sense of closeness is important. Recent developments in artificial skin by German scientists from Saarland University represent a new era in virtual interactions. German researchers from Saarland University have developed ultra-thin films that can transmit the sensation of touch over a distance. This cutting-edge technology provides new opportunities for virtual communication, especially for those who find themselves far from their loved ones. The ultra-thin films developed by the researchers, just 50 micrometers thick, can be integrated into textiles and worn like a second skin. These films act as sensors that recognize tactile signals from mom or dad, and as actuators that transmit these movements to the baby. Parents' touch to the fabric activates sensors that react to pressure and deform the ultra-thin film. This ... >>

The attractiveness of caring men 14.04.2024

The stereotype that women prefer "bad boys" has long been widespread. However, recent research conducted by British scientists from Monash University offers a new perspective on this issue. They looked at how women responded to men's emotional responsibility and willingness to help others. The study's findings could change our understanding of what makes men attractive to women. A study conducted by scientists from Monash University leads to new findings about men's attractiveness to women. In the experiment, women were shown photographs of men with brief stories about their behavior in various situations, including their reaction to an encounter with a homeless person. Some of the men ignored the homeless man, while others helped him, such as buying him food. A study found that men who showed empathy and kindness were more attractive to women compared to men who showed empathy and kindness. ... >>

Charging electric vehicles while driving 19.05.2021

The problem of battery charging is one of the reasons preventing the widespread use of electric vehicles. Perhaps the development of researchers from Cornell University in the USA, who have created a technology for charging batteries while an electric car is in motion, will help solve it.

The development was led by Khurram Afridi University, Associate Professor of Electrical and Computer Engineering, who has been working on a project for the past seven years to introduce infrastructure for wireless car charging on American roads.

In their work, the researchers used the achievements of Nikola Tesla, who 100 years ago used alternating electric fields to power flashlights that were not connected to the network. The new technology involves embedding special metal plates in the roadway connected to a power line and a high-frequency inverter. These plates will create alternating electric fields that attract and repel pairs of plates attached to the bottom of the electric vehicle, generating power.

Researchers have already made some progress. With their technology, electric vehicles with a ground clearance of up to 18 cm can be propelled. In addition, charging continues even if the electric vehicle is driven on a road with plates that are several meters apart and not completely aligned. The new technology can now fully charge the battery of a small electric vehicle such as the Nissan Leaf in 4-5 hours.

The main difficulties during the development process were related to the selection of suitable components that could withstand high voltage, as well as suitable for use in different weather conditions.

To integrate the new technology, major repairs of public roads will have to be carried out, which requires the allocation of huge funds. According to scientists, electrification should begin with busy highways and main roads in large American cities.
