Nobody writes to the Colonel

Gabriel García Márquez
Gabriel García Márquez

Phraseologism: Nobody writes to the colonel.

Meaning: Quoted as a comment (reproach, complaint) about loneliness, loss of contact with loved ones, lack of information, etc.

Origin: From Spanish: "El colonel no quen le escriba". The title of the story (1961) by the Colombian writer Gabriel Garcia Marquez.

Random phraseology:

Whoever comes to us with a sword will perish by the sword!

Meaning:

It is cited as a warning and warning for the future of a defeated or potential aggressor.

Origin:

It is generally accepted that these words belong to the Novgorod prince Alexander Nevsky, the hero of the battle with the Swedes on the Neva and with the crusader knights on Lake Peipus. And he said them supposedly as a warning to the ambassadors of the Livonian Order, who, after the Battle of the Ice (in the summer of 1242), came to him in Veliky Novgorod to ask for "eternal peace." In fact, Alexander Nevsky has nothing to do with these words - in the few chronicle sources that tell about him ("The Sofia First Chronicle" and "The Pskov Second Chronicle") there is no mention of either these words or others, even remotely on them similar. The author of these words is the Soviet writer Pyotr Andreevich Pavlenko (1899-1951), and they first appeared in his film script "Alexander Nevsky". They, according to the script, are pronounced by the protagonist of the film: Whoever enters us with a sword will die from the sword. On that stood and stands the Russian land! (see: Pavlenko N. A. Alexander Nevsky: Film story // Collected works. T. 4. M., 1954). The film (directed by Sergei Eisenstein) was released on December 1, 1938, and since then these words have been associated with the name of Alexander Nevsky as his personal, "historical" phrase. Obviously, this phrase is based on the well-known gospel expression: "Those who take the sword will perish by the sword." Or in full: "Then Jesus said to him: return your sword to its place, for all who take the sword will perish by the sword" (Gospel of Matthew, 26:52). A similar expression was well known in the ancient world, in pre-evangelical times. For example, in ancient Rome it was used as a catchphrase: Whoever fights with a sword dies by the sword - Qui gladio ferit, gladio perit.

Artificial leather for touch emulation 15.04.2024

In a modern technology world where distance is becoming increasingly commonplace, maintaining connection and a sense of closeness is important. Recent developments in artificial skin by German scientists from Saarland University represent a new era in virtual interactions. German researchers from Saarland University have developed ultra-thin films that can transmit the sensation of touch over a distance. This cutting-edge technology provides new opportunities for virtual communication, especially for those who find themselves far from their loved ones. The ultra-thin films developed by the researchers, just 50 micrometers thick, can be integrated into textiles and worn like a second skin. These films act as sensors that recognize tactile signals from mom or dad, and as actuators that transmit these movements to the baby. Parents' touch to the fabric activates sensors that react to pressure and deform the ultra-thin film. This ... >>

The attractiveness of caring men 14.04.2024

The stereotype that women prefer "bad boys" has long been widespread. However, recent research conducted by British scientists from Monash University offers a new perspective on this issue. They looked at how women responded to men's emotional responsibility and willingness to help others. The study's findings could change our understanding of what makes men attractive to women. A study conducted by scientists from Monash University leads to new findings about men's attractiveness to women. In the experiment, women were shown photographs of men with brief stories about their behavior in various situations, including their reaction to an encounter with a homeless person. Some of the men ignored the homeless man, while others helped him, such as buying him food. Network video intercom Axis A8004-VE 19.04.2015

Axis Communications announced the release of the Axis A8004-VE network video intercom. It includes an intercom that provides two-way voice communication without echo, as well as a built-in HDTV camera with WDR function. The network video intercom provides identification of incoming and outgoing people in daylight and at night, even under adverse operating conditions.

The Axis A8004-VE is available in a weatherproof and vandal resistant housing and is suitable for both indoor and outdoor installations. Thanks to Power over Ethernet technology, a single network cable is enough to connect the station, while the power supply is enough to support the operation of most standard door locks and control them directly from the video station.

When used as part of small and medium-sized systems, such as in retail stores or offices, the Axis A8004-VE network video intercom will not only improve the security of office premises and surrounding areas, but also increase the efficiency of daily work. The network video intercom provides contact and identification of visitors and supports remote access control from a fixed IP phone, mobile device or directly through a video management system (VMS).

The Axis A8004-VE network video intercom is designed based on open standards and application programming interfaces (APIs) and is also suitable for large-scale installations, such as airports, where integration of various systems is required, such as video surveillance, physical access control and IP telephony. Full compatibility with standards and the ONVIF standard, the VAPIX interface and the SIP protocol makes it extremely easy to integrate the device with other systems. This enables Axis' application development partners to provide customers with solutions tailored to their specific needs.

The new device is compatible with Axis Camera Station 4.20, which is scheduled for release in May. In addition, full support for the Axis A8004-VE network video intercom will be available from day one in the video management software of Axis' application development partners Genetec, Aimetis and SeeTec.

The network video intercom will be presented for the first time at MIPS 2015 at the Axis Communications booth. The device will go on sale through the Axis distribution network in May.
