Toshiba Efficient Thin Film Organic Photovoltaic Module

Toshiba has succeeded in creating a thin-film organic photovoltaic (OPV) module measuring 50x50mm and boasting a record efficiency of 9,9%. A cell with dimensions of 10x10 mm shows an efficiency of 11,2%.

Toshiba has been developing this technology for years: in September 2012, they managed to achieve a rate of 7,7% for OPVs 50x50 mm and 9,2% for a single cell.

According to the developers, they were able to achieve an increase in efficiency due to improvements in the p-type semiconductor organic material, which as a result turned out to be more sensitive to the long wavelength part of the spectrum. A new element structure was also involved, which was called the "inverted structure".

It is claimed that the new achievement will bring closer the full-scale commercialization of thin-film organic solar cells - thin, light and inexpensive compared to existing silicon batteries.

Cooling servers with a dielectric liquid 16.04.2014

The method of cooling the electronic components of a computer by immersion in a coolant was invented a long time ago. But just today, low-cost solutions that allow cooling server components without the use of water and electricity are becoming very relevant.

Despite the increase in energy efficiency, the power consumed by individual servers is also growing every year. Intel, for example, two years ago reported on experiments to dip Xeon processors into oil, which showed a reduction in consumption in the complex by 50-60%. The next experiments give hope that it will be possible to achieve a reduction in system power consumption by 90% or more.

Intel has created a system with SGI called Ice X. In fact, this is a full-fledged server running on Intel Xeon processors, completely immersed in the so-called "dry liquid" Novec manufactured by 3M. This liquid is non-conductive, so that electronic components can work in it without the risk of contact oxidation or short circuits.

True, this liquid also has disadvantages: it does not allow optical communication lines to fully operate, since it gets into insufficiently sealed connectors, worsening, as a result, the quality of data transmission. Therefore, we still have to work in this direction, creating, among other things, a new design of motherboards that takes into account the use of new environments.

However, 3M Novec fluid has been used in real conditions in fire extinguishing systems for several years, so its production is debugged, and its behavior is quite well known.
