Reevaluate your values

Socrates
Socrates

Phraseologism: Reevaluate your values.

Meaning: Take nothing for granted, check everything, judge everything for yourself.

Origin: The future great philosopher Diogenes of Sinope (400-325 BC) received such an answer from the Delphic oracle when he asked him what he should do. Following literally the advice of this soothsayer (“overestimate values”), Diogenes even became a counterfeiter. And only after meeting one of the students of Socrates, he understood the meaning of the prediction: his true vocation is to be a philosopher, to overestimate spiritual values, to make his own judgment about everything, and not to follow the established opinion.

Random phraseology:

I have very serious disagreements with the Soviet government.

Meaning:

About views that run counter to the official ideology.

Origin:

From the novel (ch. 2) "The Golden Calf" (1931) by Soviet writers Ilya Ilf (1897-1937) and Evgeny Petrov (1903-1942). Ostap Bender: "I have serious disagreements with the Soviet authorities. They want to build socialism, but I don't."

Artificial leather for touch emulation 15.04.2024

In a modern technology world where distance is becoming increasingly commonplace, maintaining connection and a sense of closeness is important. Recent developments in artificial skin by German scientists from Saarland University represent a new era in virtual interactions. German researchers from Saarland University have developed ultra-thin films that can transmit the sensation of touch over a distance. This cutting-edge technology provides new opportunities for virtual communication, especially for those who find themselves far from their loved ones. The ultra-thin films developed by the researchers, just 50 micrometers thick, can be integrated into textiles and worn like a second skin. These films act as sensors that recognize tactile signals from mom or dad, and as actuators that transmit these movements to the baby. Parents' touch to the fabric activates sensors that react to pressure and deform the ultra-thin film. This ... >>

The attractiveness of caring men 14.04.2024

The stereotype that women prefer "bad boys" has long been widespread. However, recent research conducted by British scientists from Monash University offers a new perspective on this issue. They looked at how women responded to men's emotional responsibility and willingness to help others. The study's findings could change our understanding of what makes men attractive to women. A study conducted by scientists from Monash University leads to new findings about men's attractiveness to women. In the experiment, women were shown photographs of men with brief stories about their behavior in various situations, including their reaction to an encounter with a homeless person. Some of the men ignored the homeless man, while others helped him, such as buying him food. A study found that men who showed empathy and kindness were more attractive to women compared to men who showed empathy and kindness. ... >>

Metabolic weight gain switch 04.09.2015

Researchers at MIT and Harvard Medical School have discovered a new way to control human metabolism and tell adipocytes, or fat cells, when to store and when to burn fat.

Scientists have found that it's all about the IRX3 and IRX5 genes, which control the process of thermogenesis, in which fats decompose and heat is produced. Usually, the process of thermogenesis is activated by exercise, diet, or sub-zero temperatures, but in some cases, its activation is very difficult.

Studies show that a single nucleotide genetic difference can lead to obesity or overweight. In individuals at risk, the nucleotide base replaces thymine with cytosine, which triggers the action of IRX3 and IRX5. Those, in turn, turn off the process of thermogenesis, which leads to the accumulation of lipids and, over time, to obesity.

By altering this nucleotide using the CRISPR/Cas9 system, a technology that allows precise changes to the DNA sequence, scientists can replace cytosine with thymine and thus turn off IRX3 and IRX5, restore thermogenesis to a safe level, and reduce lipid accumulation.

Suppressing the actions of the IRX3 gene in mice resulted in significant changes in the body's energy balance, reduction in weight and all major fat stores, and resistance to high-fat diets.
