One swallow does not make spring

Krylov I.A.
Krylov I.A.

Phraseologism: One swallow does not make spring.

Meaning: About false or insufficient signs of something.

Origin: From the fable of the ancient Greek fabulist Aesop (VI century BC) about a young man who squandered all his father's inheritance. Of it, he kept only a cloak, in which he wrapped himself in winter. And when he saw the first swallow that arrived, he decided that now he did not need it either, since spring had come. But the frosts hit, the swallow died, and it became clear that the young man was cruelly mistaken in hastening to part with a warm cloak. On the same plot, I. A. Krylov wrote the fable "Mot and Swallow" (1818), in which this expression is called a folk proverb: "Yes, he just forgot the proverb among the people: / That a swallow alone does not make spring."

Random phraseology:

There are also judges in Berlin.

Meaning:

It is used ironically, with the appropriate replacement of the word Berlin for the characteristics of judicial arbitrariness.

Origin:

In the panegyric biographies of the Prussian king Frederick II, the story is told that he once wished to demolish the mill in his residence of Sanssouci. The miller, to whom it belonged, went to court. The case was decided in his favor, and the king obeyed the court order and did not touch the mill. This anecdote served as the subject for the French story "The Miller from Sanssouci" (1797), which was included in all anthologies of French literature. Its author, Francois Andrier (1759-1833), who was at one time a judge, put into the mouth of the miller who won the trial, the exclamation: "Don't be judges in Berlin ..." This phrase received circulation in the form: "There are still judges in Berlin ", often quoted in French: "II y a des juges a Berlin!"

Artificial leather for touch emulation 15.04.2024

In a modern technology world where distance is becoming increasingly commonplace, maintaining connection and a sense of closeness is important. Recent developments in artificial skin by German scientists from Saarland University represent a new era in virtual interactions. German researchers from Saarland University have developed ultra-thin films that can transmit the sensation of touch over a distance. This cutting-edge technology provides new opportunities for virtual communication, especially for those who find themselves far from their loved ones. The ultra-thin films developed by the researchers, just 50 micrometers thick, can be integrated into textiles and worn like a second skin. These films act as sensors that recognize tactile signals from mom or dad, and as actuators that transmit these movements to the baby. Parents' touch to the fabric activates sensors that react to pressure and deform the ultra-thin film. This ... >>
