O holy simplicity!

Jan Hus
Jan Hus

Phraseologism: O holy simplicity!

Meaning: About a naive person.

Origin: From Latin: "O sancta simplicitas!" Legend attributes these words to Jan Hus (1371-1415), the leader of the Czech national liberation movement. Sentenced by the church council as a heretic to be burned, he, as is commonly believed, uttered these words, already standing at the stake, when he saw how an old woman, in a fit of religious zeal, threw into the fire the brushwood she had brought. However, historians who studied eyewitness accounts of the death of Jan Hus did not find any confirmation of this legend. In fact, this expression is much older. It was first heard back in the 345th century: according to the church writer Turanius Rufinus (c. 410-325) in his continuation of Eusebius' History of the Church, the words "holy simplicity" were uttered by one of the theologians at the First Council of Nicaea in XNUMX.

Random phraseology:

About a man who is dressed fashionably, in everything new - "from the needle" (jokingly-iron.)

Origin:

From the novel in verse "Eugene Onegin" (1823-1831) by A. S. Pushkin (1799-1837) (1, stanza 4): "Here is my Onegin at large, // Cut in the latest fashion, // Dressed like a London dandy - // And finally saw the light."

Artificial leather for touch emulation 15.04.2024

In a modern technology world where distance is becoming increasingly commonplace, maintaining connection and a sense of closeness is important. Recent developments in artificial skin by German scientists from Saarland University represent a new era in virtual interactions. German researchers from Saarland University have developed ultra-thin films that can transmit the sensation of touch over a distance. This cutting-edge technology provides new opportunities for virtual communication, especially for those who find themselves far from their loved ones. The ultra-thin films developed by the researchers, just 50 micrometers thick, can be integrated into textiles and worn like a second skin. These films act as sensors that recognize tactile signals from mom or dad, and as actuators that transmit these movements to the baby. Parents' touch to the fabric activates sensors that react to pressure and deform the ultra-thin film. This ... >>

The attractiveness of caring men 14.04.2024

The stereotype that women prefer "bad boys" has long been widespread. However, recent research conducted by British scientists from Monash University offers a new perspective on this issue. They looked at how women responded to men's emotional responsibility and willingness to help others. The study's findings could change our understanding of what makes men attractive to women. A study conducted by scientists from Monash University leads to new findings about men's attractiveness to women. In the experiment, women were shown photographs of men with brief stories about their behavior in various situations, including their reaction to an encounter with a homeless person. Some of the men ignored the homeless man, while others helped him, such as buying him food. A study found that men who showed empathy and kindness were more attractive to women compared to men who showed empathy and kindness. ... >>

Biological time can be determined by a blood test 22.09.2018

It is known that many diseases behave differently at different times of the day - for example, in the male body, the consequences of a heart attack will be more serious if an attack occurs during sleep; also, drugs and medical procedures act differently depending on what "internal hour" they fall on (in particular, a year ago we wrote that some heart surgeries are best done in the middle of the day). So it would be very good if we had a way to accurately enough, quickly and easily determine our biological time.

It is known that many genes obey the biological clock. The activity of a gene can be determined by the level of messenger RNA that is copied from it - as we know, RNA molecules serve as an intermediary, a carrier of genetic information from DNA to molecular machines that synthesize proteins. Researchers from Northwestern University (Chicago) have selected forty out of thousands and thousands of human genes that are most convenient to use to assess biological rhythms - that is, they leave fairly noticeable traces in the blood in the form of RNA, and their activity is strongly subordinated to daily rhythms.

The method was tested on eleven volunteers, and it turned out that it allows you to guess the internal time with an accuracy of two hours. Of course, before there were attempts to determine the time of the circadian rhythm by blood, but in other methods, many samples were taken for this.

In the new method, only two blood samples per day are sufficient. The authors of the work claim that their analysis allows taking into account individual characteristics in the activity of genes, and therefore it can be used with any person.
