Night of long knives

German
German

Phraseologism: Night of the Long Knives.

Meaning: Bloody conspiracy, rebellion.

Origin: From German: Die Nacht tier langen Messer. The code name of the operation (June 30, 1934), during which SS detachments destroyed the leadership of the SA assault detachments (stormtroopers). Earlier, the attack aircraft themselves threatened to arrange a "night of long knives" in Germany. Later, at a meeting of the Reichstag in the premises of the Royal Opera House (July 13, 1934), A. Hitler said: "The new, and this time bloody performance, which was dubbed the terrible name" Night of the Long Knives ", corresponded to my own thoughts." As the authors of the Polish reference book "Winged Words" (Warsaw, 1990) X. Markevich and A. Romanovsky point out, the source of this expression is the song of the assault detachments of the Nazi party: "let's sharpen long knives on the curb of the sidewalk."

Random phraseology:

Mage and Wizard.

Meaning:

1. A way to express admiration for an enterprising person who succeeds in everything, who is distinguished by dexterity in dealing with people, ingenuity, etc. (jokingly ironic). 2. At the address of an obvious adventurer and deceiver (underlined ironically).

Origin:

From the comedy "Krechinsky's Wedding" (1855) by playwright Alexander Vasilyevich Sukhov-Kobylin (1817-1903). Shuler Rasplyuev admires his colleague, the adventurer Krechinsky: "The great hero, magician and wizard! So he traveled around, he went around, he fooled a man for all eternity ... he fooled a usurer - and he will leave a great memory in itself."

Artificial leather for touch emulation 15.04.2024

In a modern technology world where distance is becoming increasingly commonplace, maintaining connection and a sense of closeness is important. Recent developments in artificial skin by German scientists from Saarland University represent a new era in virtual interactions. German researchers from Saarland University have developed ultra-thin films that can transmit the sensation of touch over a distance. This cutting-edge technology provides new opportunities for virtual communication, especially for those who find themselves far from their loved ones. The ultra-thin films developed by the researchers, just 50 micrometers thick, can be integrated into textiles and worn like a second skin. These films act as sensors that recognize tactile signals from mom or dad, and as actuators that transmit these movements to the baby. Parents' touch to the fabric activates sensors that react to pressure and deform the ultra-thin film. This ... >>

The attractiveness of caring men 14.04.2024

The stereotype that women prefer "bad boys" has long been widespread. However, recent research conducted by British scientists from Monash University offers a new perspective on this issue. They looked at how women responded to men's emotional responsibility and willingness to help others. The study's findings could change our understanding of what makes men attractive to women. A study conducted by scientists from Monash University leads to new findings about men's attractiveness to women. In the experiment, women were shown photographs of men with brief stories about their behavior in various situations, including their reaction to an encounter with a homeless person. Some of the men ignored the homeless man, while others helped him, such as buying him food. A study found that men who showed empathy and kindness were more attractive to women compared to men who showed empathy and kindness. ... >>

Long range toothfish 06.04.2003

Off the western coast of Greenland, fishermen caught a large fish unfamiliar to them: weight 70 kilograms, length 180 centimeters. She was frozen, and later delivered to Danish scientists (Greenland is under the jurisdiction of Denmark).

Ichthyologists from the University of Copenhagen were surprised to recognize in an unexpected find an Antarctic species from the Nototheniaceae family - the Patagonian toothfish. This largest fish in Antarctica was discovered relatively recently, in 1901. Until now, she was caught no north of the coast of Uruguay, and suddenly she was caught in nets at the other end of the world, in the Arctic.

The Patagonian toothfish cannot tolerate water temperatures above 11 degrees Celsius and the only way it could cross the equator was to go to depths of 500 to 1500 meters where the water is cold even in the tropics. Apparently, such a record swim is extremely rare or even unique: off the coast of Greenland, commercial fishing has been going on for more than twenty years, and the fishermen have never come across Antarctic species.
