Man does not live by bread alone
Bible
Phraseologism: Man does not live by bread alone.
Meaning: For a person to be completely happy, material well-being is not enough; he needs spiritual food, moral satisfaction.
Origin: From the Bible (Old Testament, Deuteronomy, 8:3). Moses, calming his people, tired of the long return from Egyptian captivity, said that God did not in vain subject the people of Israel to such trials: “He humbled you, made you hungry and fed you with manna, which you did not know and your fathers did not know, in order to show you, that man does not live by bread alone, but by every word that proceeds from the mouth of the Lord, man lives.” In the New Testament, in the Gospel of Matthew, this expression is also found. When Jesus was in the wilderness and kept a long fast (4:3-4), "the tempter came to Him and said: If You are the Son of God, tell these stones to become bread. He said to him in response: it is written:" not bread man will live alone, but by every word that proceeds from the mouth of God. "In modern Russia, the expression gained additional popularity after the publication (1956) of the novel "Not by Bread Alone" by Vladimir Dudintsev (1918-1998).
Random phraseology:
And pale death looks at everyone.
Meaning:
About mortal danger, about death as the inevitable end of the life of every person.
Origin:
From the ode "On the death of Prince Meshchersky" (1779) by Gavrila Romanovich Derzhavin (1743-1816): "Where there was a table of dishes, there is a coffin, // Where feasts were heard, // Tombstone faces howl there, // And death is pale on looks at everyone." |

Artificial leather for touch emulation
15.04.2024
In a modern technology world where distance is becoming increasingly commonplace, maintaining connection and a sense of closeness is important. Recent developments in artificial skin by German scientists from Saarland University represent a new era in virtual interactions. German researchers from Saarland University have developed ultra-thin films that can transmit the sensation of touch over a distance. This cutting-edge technology provides new opportunities for virtual communication, especially for those who find themselves far from their loved ones. The ultra-thin films developed by the researchers, just 50 micrometers thick, can be integrated into textiles and worn like a second skin. These films act as sensors that recognize tactile signals from mom or dad, and as actuators that transmit these movements to the baby. Parents' touch to the fabric activates sensors that react to pressure and deform the ultra-thin film. This ... >>

The attractiveness of caring men
14.04.2024
The stereotype that women prefer "bad boys" has long been widespread. However, recent research conducted by British scientists from Monash University offers a new perspective on this issue. They looked at how women responded to men's emotional responsibility and willingness to help others. The study's findings could change our understanding of what makes men attractive to women. A study conducted by scientists from Monash University leads to new findings about men's attractiveness to women. In the experiment, women were shown photographs of men with brief stories about their behavior in various situations, including their reaction to an encounter with a homeless person. Some of the men ignored the homeless man, while others helped him, such as buying him food. A study found that men who showed empathy and kindness were more attractive to women compared to men who showed empathy and kindness. ... >>

In the world, 146 million people live no higher than a meter above sea level. They cannot but be interested in forecasts of how much this level will rise due to global warming. The problem is dealt with by the UN Intergovernmental Committee on Climate Change, which includes 18 scientists from 10 countries. His latest report says that by the end of this century, the level of the oceans will rise by 59 centimeters.
However, for example, James Hansen, a NASA climatologist, believes that the growth could be five meters. Other experts object: even with a strong warming, the ice in the Arctic and Antarctic simply will not be able to melt at such a speed. According to French data, there have been periods of accelerated sea level rise over the past century, but these have been followed by times of slow rise.
German experts say that in the last eight years the rise has just slowed down. Based on global temperature data since 1880, Finnish climatologists estimate that by 2100 sea levels are expected to rise by 190 centimeters.
And the German paleontologist Anton Eisenhower reports that coral reefs, which now rise six meters above the water, were underwater 125 years ago. The climate then was much warmer than now. In short, the prospects are unclear even to specialists.
