Phraseologism: Our brother Isaiah.

Meaning: About someone close in social status, beliefs, mindset, etc., that is, about "his" person.

Origin: The primary source is the life of one of the monks of the Kiev-Pechersk Lavra named Isaac. This life tells of how one day demons came to this hermit monk, who lived in a separate cave, in the form of beautiful young men and said: "Isaac, we are angels, but Christ is coming to you, come and bow to him." Isaac allowed himself to be deceived and bowed to the demon as to Christ. Then all this evil spirit exclaimed: "Our Isaac!" And the demon, posing as Christ, forced Isaac to dance to the demonic snot, tambourines and harp. In the end, exhausted by this dance, the hermit fell unconscious (see: Paterik of the Kiev Caves Monastery. St. Petersburg, 1911). The expression (as a rule, in the colloquial version "Isakiy") was popular in Russian speech of the XNUMXth - early XNUMXth centuries. In A.N. Ostrovsky's play "Enough Stupidity in Every Wise Man," Golutvin says to Glumov: "Look how he pretends, and also, after all, our brother Isaac." Glumov replies: "I'm not your brother, and not Isakiy."
