Club of the people's war

Tolstoy L.N.
Tolstoy L.N.

Phraseologism: Cudgel of the People's War.

Meaning: On the great possibilities of a people's war.

Origin: From the novel "War and Peace" (vol. IV, part 3, 1) by L. N. Tolstoy (1828-1910): "Let's imagine two people who went out with swords to a duel according to all the rules of fencing art ... suddenly one of the opponents, feeling wounded, realizing that this was no joke ... he threw his sword and, taking the first club he came across, began to turn it around ... The swordsman, who demanded a fight according to all the rules of art, were the French, his opponent, who raised the cudgel were Russians ... Despite all the French complaints about the failure to comply with the rules ... the cudgel of the people's war rose with all its formidable and majestic strength and, without asking anyone's tastes and rules, rose, fell and nailed the French until the whole invasion did not perish."

Random phraseology:

Gentlemen of Tashkent.

Meaning:

About supporters of "Asian" forms of government, about those who are hostile to the European political tradition, the spirit of civil society.

Origin:

The name of the satire (1869-1872) by Mikhail Evgrafovin Saltykov-Shchedrin (1826-1889). "Tashkent" ironically called the tsarist bureaucrats and entrepreneurs who built the railway to Tashkent. The remoteness from the controlling center and the Asian simplicity of morals contributed to the most shameless embezzlement and all sorts of abuses among these "Tashkent". (For example, the expression of the same author: "In all countries, railways serve for transportation, and in our country, moreover, for theft"). But the writer expanded the scope of this image, meaning by "Tashkent" a very wide range of people, consisting of persecutors of education, limited retrogrades, inclined to planting "Asiaticism" in politics and public life.

Artificial leather for touch emulation 15.04.2024

In a modern technology world where distance is becoming increasingly commonplace, maintaining connection and a sense of closeness is important. Recent developments in artificial skin by German scientists from Saarland University represent a new era in virtual interactions. German researchers from Saarland University have developed ultra-thin films that can transmit the sensation of touch over a distance. This cutting-edge technology provides new opportunities for virtual communication, especially for those who find themselves far from their loved ones. The ultra-thin films developed by the researchers, just 50 micrometers thick, can be integrated into textiles and worn like a second skin. These films act as sensors that recognize tactile signals from mom or dad, and as actuators that transmit these movements to the baby. Parents' touch to the fabric activates sensors that react to pressure and deform the ultra-thin film. This ... >>

Wrist electronic gadgets are almost useless 28.05.2017

Doctors at Stanford University evaluated the effectiveness of popular fitness trackers.

The main conclusion of the work of scientists is that most fitness trackers reliably determine the heart rate, but are practically useless for calculating the energy spent on physical activity (usually expressed in kilocalories).

Experts came to such conclusions after analyzing the work of the seven most popular, according to the authors, wrist gadgets (Apple Watch, Basis Peak, Fitbit Surge, Microsoft Band, Mio Alpha 2, PulseOn and Samsung Gear S2).

A total of 60 volunteers participated in the study - 31 women and 29 men wore the devices while walking or exercising on a treadmill or exercise bike.

According to the authors, fitness trackers make mistakes in measuring calories burned due to incomplete data (height, weight, age, and other individual indicators), while a person's heart rate is always determined directly.
