Soap opera

Soap opera
Soap opera

Phraseologism: Soap opera.

Meaning: About a melodramatic series with low artistic merit, as well as about the behavior of someone reminiscent of the behavior of characters from television serial melodramas.

Origin: Soap opera is one of the formats of television series, which is distinguished by the consistent presentation of the storyline in episodes of series on television and radio. The name comes from the fact that the early television series featured advertisements for companies producing detergents and cleaning products, including soap. The advertisement was addressed primarily to housewives, the main audience for these series. The title of the first soap opera was "Betty and Bob" (1932).

Random phraseology:

With regard to meanness.

Meaning:

About the behavior, actions of people or their opinions are so low, unworthy that they border on meanness (iron., contempt.).

Origin:

From a fairy tale "for children of a fair age" called "Liberal" (1885) by Mikhail Evgrafovich Saltykov-Shchedrin (1826-1889). In it, the writer satirically depicts the spiritual evolution of Russian liberals, who first asked the government for at least some reforms - "if possible", then - "at least something", and, finally, "in relation to meanness." This is how M. E. Saltykov-Shchedrin characterized the opportunism and lack of will of the "opposition" of his day.

Artificial leather for touch emulation 15.04.2024

In a modern technology world where distance is becoming increasingly commonplace, maintaining connection and a sense of closeness is important. Recent developments in artificial skin by German scientists from Saarland University represent a new era in virtual interactions. German researchers from Saarland University have developed ultra-thin films that can transmit the sensation of touch over a distance. This cutting-edge technology provides new opportunities for virtual communication, especially for those who find themselves far from their loved ones. The ultra-thin films developed by the researchers, just 50 micrometers thick, can be integrated into textiles and worn like a second skin. These films act as sensors that recognize tactile signals from mom or dad, and as actuators that transmit these movements to the baby. Parents' touch to the fabric activates sensors that react to pressure and deform the ultra-thin film. This ... >>

The attractiveness of caring men 14.04.2024

The stereotype that women prefer "bad boys" has long been widespread. However, recent research conducted by British scientists from Monash University offers a new perspective on this issue. They looked at how women responded to men's emotional responsibility and willingness to help others. The study's findings could change our understanding of what makes men attractive to women. A study conducted by scientists from Monash University leads to new findings about men's attractiveness to women. In the experiment, women were shown photographs of men with brief stories about their behavior in various situations, including their reaction to an encounter with a homeless person. Some of the men ignored the homeless man, while others helped him, such as buying him food. A study found that men who showed empathy and kindness were more attractive to women compared to men who showed empathy and kindness. ... >>

Memory on Senet crystals 28.07.2006

US scientists have found a simple way to store information on a thin ferroelectric.

Ferroelectrics, discovered by the French pharmacist E. Seignet, have a spontaneous electric dipole moment, and its magnitude and direction can be easily changed by an external electric field. As you might guess, computer scientists have long laid eyes on such substances in the hope of creating a memory that will be much faster than the current, ferromagnetic, but just like it, will not reset when the power is turned off.

Generally speaking, ferroelectric memory is produced, but so far in small volumes. One of the reasons: it is difficult to maintain the stability of the dipole moment. This is usually done with the help of metal electrodes, enclosing a thin layer of ferroelectric between them.

If successful, ferroelectric memory on nanothreads will qualitatively change our world: one cubic centimeter of such material will store 12,8 million gigabytes of information. That is, a standard MP3 player will play songs for 100 thousand years without repeating itself, and a video player will show 32 million films that will fit on a memory card the size of a regular flash drive.
