Research in the field of the psychology of time continues to surprise us with its results. Recent discoveries by scientists from George Mason University (USA) turned out to be quite remarkable: they discovered that what we look at can greatly influence our sense of time. During the experiment, 52 participants took a series of tests, estimating the duration of viewing various images. The results were surprising: the size and detail of the images had a significant impact on the perception of time. Larger, less cluttered scenes created the illusion of time slowing down, while smaller, busier images gave the feeling of time speeding up. Researchers suggest that visual clutter or detail overload can make it difficult to perceive the world around us, which in turn can lead to faster perception of time. Bacteria for the space mining industry 12.11.2020

A biomineralization experiment on the International Space Station demonstrates the extraction of rare earth elements in microgravity and Martian gravity. It is assumed that bacteria can extract useful materials from rocks on Mars and the Moon and open the way for new technologies that will help people explore new worlds and establish settlements there.

The study is based on tests conducted by astronauts on the International Space Station who received 18 matchbox-sized mining devices - so-called biodevelopment reactors - sent by researchers from the University of Edinburgh aboard a SpaceX rocket launched from Cape Canaveral in Florida, USA, in July 2019. .

Small pieces of basalt, a rock commonly found on Earth's natural satellite and on Mars, were loaded into each device and immersed in a bacterial solution for three weeks under zero gravity.

The team's findings show that the bacteria can improve the extraction of rare earth elements from basalt in lunar and Martian landscapes by about 400%.

Experiments confirm the scientific and technical feasibility of biologically enhanced extraction of elemental resources in the solar system. Although it is not economically feasible to mine these elements in space and bring them to Earth, space biomining has the potential to support a self-sustaining human presence in space.

According to Cockell, the experiment shows that it is possible to build robotic and manned mines on the Moon in the region of the Ocean of Storms, where there are rocks with a high content of rare earth elements.
