Shrew
Ancient Greek and Roman mythology
Phraseologism: Shrew.
Meaning: Angry, grumpy woman.
Origin: From ancient Greek mythology. Megaera (literally: "Hostile") is the name of one of the three Erinyes (Roman furies), goddesses of vengeance who live in the underworld. The names of two other Erinyes - Alecto and Tisiphone, on which, according to mythology, vengeance for the murder lay.
Random phraseology:
Sesame, open up (open up)!
Meaning:
A certain key to unraveling the mystery, a way to overcome obstacles, etc. (joking).
Origin:
From the Arabic tale "Ali Baba and the Forty Thieves", which was first published (1704-1708) in French as part of other tales in the collection "A Thousand and One Nights". But it would be a mistake to attribute this tale to the legendary Scheherazade. It's just that the author of the French translation, the orientalist Antoine Gallan (1646-1715), included in the collection "A Thousand and One Nights" a fairy tale about Ali Baba he liked from another, little-known collection of Arabic tales. The words "Sesame, open (open)!" says the chieftain of forty robbers in front of the closed entrance to the cave where the looted treasures were kept. Ali Baba, who went to the forest for firewood, heard these words and, thanks to this spell, later entered the cave and became the owner of all the riches hidden there. The word "sesame" is sometimes pronounced "sim-sim". |

Artificial leather for touch emulation
15.04.2024
In a modern technology world where distance is becoming increasingly commonplace, maintaining connection and a sense of closeness is important. Recent developments in artificial skin by German scientists from Saarland University represent a new era in virtual interactions. German researchers from Saarland University have developed ultra-thin films that can transmit the sensation of touch over a distance. This cutting-edge technology provides new opportunities for virtual communication, especially for those who find themselves far from their loved ones. The ultra-thin films developed by the researchers, just 50 micrometers thick, can be integrated into textiles and worn like a second skin. These films act as sensors that recognize tactile signals from mom or dad, and as actuators that transmit these movements to the baby. Parents' touch to the fabric activates sensors that react to pressure and deform the ultra-thin film. This ... >>

The attractiveness of caring men
14.04.2024
The stereotype that women prefer "bad boys" has long been widespread. However, recent research conducted by British scientists from Monash University offers a new perspective on this issue. They looked at how women responded to men's emotional responsibility and willingness to help others. The study's findings could change our understanding of what makes men attractive to women. A study conducted by scientists from Monash University leads to new findings about men's attractiveness to women. In the experiment, women were shown photographs of men with brief stories about their behavior in various situations, including their reaction to an encounter with a homeless person. Some of the men ignored the homeless man, while others helped him, such as buying him food. A study found that men who showed empathy and kindness were more attractive to women compared to men who showed empathy and kindness. ... >>
Random news from the Archive Space debris sensor to be installed on ISS
29.07.2017
The US National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) plans to install a space debris sensor on the outer surface of the International Space Station (ISS).
The Space Debris Sensor is scheduled to launch in the cargo hold of the SpaceX 13 Dragon spacecraft in November 2017. After the capsule docks with the International Space Station, a robotic arm will remove the sensor from the spacecraft and attach it to the outer surface of the Columbus module.
The sensor will be installed on the module, which is located in the forward part of the ISS in the direction of flight. It will stay there for three years, taking on the impact of space debris less than 1 mm in size. After that, it will be returned to Earth for evaluation by specialists.
The knowledge gained, the report says, will be used to update a computer model of the spread of space debris in near-Earth orbit.
