Mata Hari

Margareta Gertrude Zelle
Margareta Gertrude Zelle

Phraseologism: Mata Hari.

Meaning: About an adventurous woman.

Origin: A legendary World War I spy who was accused by the French authorities of passing secret information to Germany and executed. Real name - Margarita Gertrude Zelle (1876-1917), Dutch by birth, famous dancer. Since a considerable share in her repertoire was occupied by exotic oriental dances. she adopted the stage name Mata Hari to create a more intriguing image for herself. When in 1905 she offered the Parisian public oriental dances with stripping, her name immediately became widely known throughout the French capital. Legend and human rumor made M. Zelle the "queen of espionage", who easily communicated with the highest military officials of France and Germany, but the true role of this adventurous warehouse of a woman is not really fully clarified and, apparently, more modest than is commonly believed.

The words of Ostap Bender, who specifies the age of the old women living in a nursing home: "Are those who were born before historical materialism?" (that is, before the advent of Marxist theory).

Artificial leather for touch emulation 15.04.2024

In a modern technology world where distance is becoming increasingly commonplace, maintaining connection and a sense of closeness is important. Recent developments in artificial skin by German scientists from Saarland University represent a new era in virtual interactions. German researchers from Saarland University have developed ultra-thin films that can transmit the sensation of touch over a distance. This cutting-edge technology provides new opportunities for virtual communication, especially for those who find themselves far from their loved ones. The ultra-thin films developed by the researchers, just 50 micrometers thick, can be integrated into textiles and worn like a second skin. These films act as sensors that recognize tactile signals from mom or dad, and as actuators that transmit these movements to the baby. Parents' touch to the fabric activates sensors that react to pressure and deform the ultra-thin film. This ... >>

The attractiveness of caring men 14.04.2024

The stereotype that women prefer "bad boys" has long been widespread. However, recent research conducted by British scientists from Monash University offers a new perspective on this issue. They looked at how women responded to men's emotional responsibility and willingness to help others. The study's findings could change our understanding of what makes men attractive to women. A study conducted by scientists from Monash University leads to new findings about men's attractiveness to women. In the experiment, women were shown photographs of men with brief stories about their behavior in various situations, including their reaction to an encounter with a homeless person. Some of the men ignored the homeless man, while others helped him, such as buying him food. A study found that men who showed empathy and kindness were more attractive to women compared to men who showed empathy and kindness. ... >>

Circadian cycle gene influences lifespan 11.02.2016

Scientists from the University of Pennsylvania in the US found that the work of a gene that regulates the daily cycle of sleep and wakefulness in mice is also associated with life expectancy. His "off" led to the fact that two-thirds of the mice in the experiment grew old faster and died.

The researchers artificially created mice in which the BMAL1 protein was inactive during adulthood and compared them with another group - mice that were absent from the protein from birth. In both cases, it disrupted the circadian rhythm of the animals - cyclical changes in blood pressure, behavior, and so on. And some of the signs of aging were also common to both groups - cataracts, signs of neurodegeneration. But in some respects, these groups differed. Mice in which the gene was deactivated already in adulthood did not suffer from arthritis, neither the birth rate nor, most importantly, the overall life expectancy in their population changed.

An analysis of gene expression showed that in both cases the work of the genes responsible for the regulation of the circadian rhythm was blocked, but if the protein was absent from birth, the work of many other genes not related to this function was also disrupted.

Thus, scientists came to the conclusion that it is necessary to reconsider the role of the genes responsible for the daily cycle: apparently, they affect life expectancy not so much by themselves, due to the disruption of the cycle and rapid aging, but play a large role at an early age, in the process of development.
