Manna of Heaven

Bible
Bible

Phraseologism: Manna from heaven.

Meaning: Something valuable, rare and necessary, received as a gift.

Origin: From the Bible. The legendary food that God sent to the starving Jews every morning from heaven during their journey through the desert of Egypt to the "promised land" - Palestine. In the Old Testament (Exodus, 16:14-15, 31) it is said about this as follows: “The dew rose, and behold, on the surface of the desert something small, grainy, fine, like frost on the ground. And the sons of Israel saw, and said to each other: what is it? For they did not know what it was. And Moses said to them, This is the bread that the Lord has given you to eat." And further (verse 31): "And the house of Israel called the name of that bread: manna, it was like coriander seed, white, and tasted like a cake with honey." This expression gave rise to others: "to wait like manna from heaven" - to expect something with impatience, "to wait for manna from heaven" - to hope that the matter will be done by itself, "to eat manna from heaven" - to live from hand to mouth, by odd jobs.

Random phraseology:

Take it, take it, or even dirty your claws!

Meaning:

It is jokingly-ironically quoted as a commentary on the creed of the maximalist, on his behavior, etc.

Origin:

From the fable "The Little Crow" (1811) by I. A. Krylov (1769-1844). A. S. Pushkin in his letter to P. A. Vyazemsky (November 4, 1823): “Our censorship is so capricious that it is impossible to measure the circle of our action with it - it’s better not to think about it - but if you take it, take it like that, not like dirtying your claws."

Artificial leather for touch emulation 15.04.2024

In a modern technology world where distance is becoming increasingly commonplace, maintaining connection and a sense of closeness is important. Recent developments in artificial skin by German scientists from Saarland University represent a new era in virtual interactions. German researchers from Saarland University have developed ultra-thin films that can transmit the sensation of touch over a distance. This cutting-edge technology provides new opportunities for virtual communication, especially for those who find themselves far from their loved ones. The ultra-thin films developed by the researchers, just 50 micrometers thick, can be integrated into textiles and worn like a second skin. These films act as sensors that recognize tactile signals from mom or dad, and as actuators that transmit these movements to the baby. Parents' touch to the fabric activates sensors that react to pressure and deform the ultra-thin film. This ... >>

The attractiveness of caring men 14.04.2024

The stereotype that women prefer "bad boys" has long been widespread. However, recent research conducted by British scientists from Monash University offers a new perspective on this issue. They looked at how women responded to men's emotional responsibility and willingness to help others. The study's findings could change our understanding of what makes men attractive to women. A study conducted by scientists from Monash University leads to new findings about men's attractiveness to women. In the experiment, women were shown photographs of men with brief stories about their behavior in various situations, including their reaction to an encounter with a homeless person. The danger of e-waste 11.09.2008

One of the most common handicrafts in Chinese villages is the disassembly and disposal of used or obsolete electronic devices - computers, monitors, televisions.

As a rule, workers do not wear protective respirators. Meanwhile, poisonous compounds are used in all this electronics. The most important of them are flame retardants, which are introduced into the insulation of wires and into the basis of printed circuit boards to protect against fires. These are polybrominated diphenyl ethers that have a bad effect on brain development, memory, behavior, learning ability, the thyroid gland and the reproductive system.

Chinese scientists measured the content of flame retardants in the blood of the inhabitants of one village, 80% of which are involved in the disposal of electronic scrap. The poisons turned out to be three times more than in the blood of fishermen from a village located 50 kilometers from the first, and 200 times more than in the Swedish workers involved in the recycling of electronics.
