Miraculous staircase

Tarakhovskaya E.Ya.
Tarakhovskaya E.Ya.

Phraseologism: The staircase is amazing.

Meaning: Subway escalator (in conversation with children).

Origin: From the poem "Song about the stairs" by the Soviet writer Elizaveta Yakovlevna Tarakhovskaya (1895-1968): "The miracle staircase / Runs by itself." Published in the collection "Metropolitan" (1932), which was later called "Metro".

Random phraseology:

Bury talent in the ground.

Meaning:

Miss an opportunity.

Origin:

From the Bible. In the Gospel of Matthew (25:15-30), where this expression originates, it is about money. Talent is the name of an ancient Roman silver coin (from ancient Greek talanton - a coin of great denomination). The gospel parable tells how a certain man, leaving, instructed his slaves to protect property. To one servant he gave five talents, to another two, and to a third one. The first two slaves put the money "into business", that is, they gave it in growth, and the one who received one talent simply buried it in the ground in order to save it in the best possible way. When the master returned home, he demanded a report from the slaves. The first slave returned to him ten talents instead of five, the second - four instead of two, and the third gave the master the same one talent. And he explained to the owner that he saved the money by burying it. The master praised the first two slaves, and said to the third: "Cunning and lazy slave! ... you should have given my silver to the merchants, and if I came I would have received mine with a profit." Subsequently, the word "talent" began to mean abilities, talents, and the biblical phrase "bury talent in the ground" received a different, allegorical meaning - to neglect one's abilities, not to develop them, etc. The same passage from the Bible gave birth to another popular expression, now little-known, but commonly used in Russia in the 25th century: to him a talent, to him two - according to the above phrase in the Church Slavonic language (Gospel of Matthew, 15:XNUMX): "And to him I gave five talents, to him two, to him one ". This expression usually served as a commentary on the social (property) inequality of people or (which is closer to the modern interpretation of the biblical text) on the versatility, versatility of someone's talent, talent.

Artificial leather for touch emulation 15.04.2024

In a modern technology world where distance is becoming increasingly commonplace, maintaining connection and a sense of closeness is important. Recent developments in artificial skin by German scientists from Saarland University represent a new era in virtual interactions. German researchers from Saarland University have developed ultra-thin films that can transmit the sensation of touch over a distance. This cutting-edge technology provides new opportunities for virtual communication, especially for those who find themselves far from their loved ones. The ultra-thin films developed by the researchers, just 50 micrometers thick, can be integrated into textiles and worn like a second skin. These films act as sensors that recognize tactile signals from mom or dad, and as actuators that transmit these movements to the baby. Parents' touch to the fabric activates sensors that react to pressure and deform the ultra-thin film. This ... >>

Trypillians ate almost no meat 06.01.2024

Research carried out by scientists from the Center for Collaborative Research (SFB) 1266 at the Christian Albrecht University in Kiel (CAU) reveals interesting aspects of the diet of Trypillian societies living in Europe around 6000 years ago.

An analysis of the Trypillian diet reveals unexpected aspects of their agricultural practices, emphasizing the importance of plant-animal interactions in providing adequate nutrition.

It was previously thought that these settlements in Moldova and Ukraine based their existence on subsistence agriculture. However, new research based on analysis of carbon and nitrogen isotopes in samples over the past 10 years has provided new data.

Dr. Frank Schlutz from Kiel stated: “The supply of food and pasture to large settlements required extremely complex management.”

The results of the study showed that the Trypillians, in addition to peas, which were the main source of food, used a small amount of livestock as fertilizer. Grain was also part of their diet, while meat consumption was practically nil. They used straw obtained from agricultural crops as animal feed.

This study highlights the importance of the relationship between crop and livestock production in the lives of Trypillian people, which allowed them to eat richly and healthily while reducing the labor and resource intensity of meat production.
