Rootless cosmopolitans

Zhdanov A.A.
Zhdanov A.A.

Phraseologism: Rootless cosmopolitans.

Meaning: False pathos of ideological persecution.

Origin: From a speech at a meeting of figures of Soviet music in the Central Committee of the CPSU (January, 1948) by Andrei Alexandrovich Zhdanov (1896-1948), one of the highest party leaders of the USSR of the Stalin era: "Internationalism is born where national art flourishes. Forgetting this truth means [. ..] lose your face, become a rootless cosmopolitan". A year later, the Pravda newspaper (January 28, 1949) published an article "On an anti-patriotic group of critics", which said: "Rootless cosmopolitans are attacking the art of the Art Theater and the Maly Theater - our national pride." Apparently, this expression was quite familiar to the party language and was found in it (in one form or another) even before the revolution. For example, the Menshevik (right wing of the RSDLP) Lev Martov in the preface to the pamphlet Against the War! (1917) wrote: "People who have shown so much inconsistency throw at me the contemptuous epithet "groundless cosmopolitan", which I have long heard from my National Socialist opponents from the camp of oppressed nationalities ..." In the USSR in the early 50s. so they began to call Jews suspected by the authorities of anti-Soviet, dissident sentiments.

Random phraseology:

Horses are not changed at the crossing.

Meaning:

On the inappropriateness of replacing the executor, leader.

Origin:

From English: Never swap horses crossing a stream. Anglo-American proverb. It entered the socio-political vocabulary of the United States and other countries after it was heard in a speech delivered in 1864 by the 16th President of the United States (1861-1865) Abraham Lincoln (1809-1865) on the occasion of his candidacy for a second presidential term . In a slightly different formulation, this idea was repeated in 1916 by one of the Kadet leaders in the State Duma, Vasily Maklakov (1870-1957). Then, under the influence of defeats at the front, in many factions of the State Duma, the question of the removal of Tsar Nicholas II, the Supreme Commander of the Russian army, was debated. On this occasion, V. A. Maklakov said that although the steering wheel of the Russian state "car" is in the hands of a madman, this driver should not be changed at full speed.

Artificial leather for touch emulation 15.04.2024

In a modern technology world where distance is becoming increasingly commonplace, maintaining connection and a sense of closeness is important. Recent developments in artificial skin by German scientists from Saarland University represent a new era in virtual interactions. German researchers from Saarland University have developed ultra-thin films that can transmit the sensation of touch over a distance. This cutting-edge technology provides new opportunities for virtual communication, especially for those who find themselves far from their loved ones. The ultra-thin films developed by the researchers, just 50 micrometers thick, can be integrated into textiles and worn like a second skin. These films act as sensors that recognize tactile signals from mom or dad, and as actuators that transmit these movements to the baby. Parents' touch to the fabric activates sensors that react to pressure and deform the ultra-thin film. This ... >>
