no fools

Muscovy
Muscovy

Phraseologism: No fools.

Meaning: In all seriousness, no jokes (simple).

Origin: Sometimes the expression is referred to as a "billiard" language. In some varieties of billiards, it was required to put a certain number of balls into the pockets. Balls that accidentally rolled into the pocket were jokingly called "fools". Some players preferred not to count such balls, they played "no fools". However, the turnover is older: it was born during the Russian Middle Ages and is associated with the customs of the Moscow royal court. When in the royal chambers the well-born boyars were going to "think of the sovereign's Duma", to make serious decisions, their meetings were held in strict secrecy. No one was allowed in there, especially witty and talkative "fools", that is, jesters, who were customary to keep at the royal court. The expression "without fools" literally meant "without jesters", and figuratively - "in all seriousness".

Artificial leather for touch emulation 15.04.2024

In a modern technology world where distance is becoming increasingly commonplace, maintaining connection and a sense of closeness is important. Recent developments in artificial skin by German scientists from Saarland University represent a new era in virtual interactions. German researchers from Saarland University have developed ultra-thin films that can transmit the sensation of touch over a distance. This cutting-edge technology provides new opportunities for virtual communication, especially for those who find themselves far from their loved ones. The ultra-thin films developed by the researchers, just 50 micrometers thick, can be integrated into textiles and worn like a second skin. These films act as sensors that recognize tactile signals from mom or dad, and as actuators that transmit these movements to the baby. Parents' touch to the fabric activates sensors that react to pressure and deform the ultra-thin film. This ... >>

The attractiveness of caring men 14.04.2024

The stereotype that women prefer "bad boys" has long been widespread. However, recent research conducted by British scientists from Monash University offers a new perspective on this issue. They looked at how women responded to men's emotional responsibility and willingness to help others. The study's findings could change our understanding of what makes men attractive to women. A study conducted by scientists from Monash University leads to new findings about men's attractiveness to women. In the experiment, women were shown photographs of men with brief stories about their behavior in various situations, including their reaction to an encounter with a homeless person. Some of the men ignored the homeless man, while others helped him, such as buying him food. A study found that men who showed empathy and kindness were more attractive to women compared to men who showed empathy and kindness. ... >>

Microsoft servers will be equipped with their own processors 27.06.2014

In early 2015, Microsoft plans to move the Bing search engine to servers with FPGA processors. The corporation independently reprogrammed Altera chips for processing Bing requests.

Microsoft has completed testing of servers with FPGA chips, in the programming of which the engineers of the corporation took part. The servers have been configured to serve the Bing service, Wired reports. FPGAs are microchips that can be reprogrammed after production to meet new challenges or specific applications.

In the case of Microsoft, the FPGA chips were produced by Altera, and Microsoft was involved in their development and production at the level of reprogramming. The author of the project, Doug Berger, believes that the new processors will at least double the speed of the service.

The pilot program involved 1632 FPGA servers from the pioneer of programmable chips, Altera. After the successful completion of the program, Microsoft decided in early 2015 to equip existing Microsoft data centers with such servers. These servers will initially serve Bing, and then - probably - other Microsoft services.

Each server was equipped with an Intel Xeon CPU based on a standard architecture (x86) and a board with an FPGA chip. The FPGA-chip boards in all 1632 servers were combined into a Catapult "machine search network" that handled requests from the Bing site, taking over this function from the CPUs. At the same time, the network had the ability to combine 8 FPGA boards into one node to improve performance.
