Looking for a man

Aesop
Aesop

Phraseologism: Looking for a person.

Meaning: It is not so easy to find a person who, in terms of his moral qualities, really meets this binding title.

Origin: From Latin: Hominem quaero. As the Greek writer Diogenes Laertes (III century) wrote in his essay "The Life, Teachings and Opinions of Famous Philosophers", once the ancient Greek philosopher Diogenes from Sinope (400-325 BC) lit a lantern during the day and began to walk with it through crowded places of Athens. To all perplexed questions, he answered briefly: "I am looking for a person." Thus, he showed the Athenians that it was extremely difficult to find among them a person worthy of this title. This work of Diogenes Laertes formed the basis of the well-known legend about the great philosopher. There is another version of the origin of this phrase, which was outlined in one of his writings by the Roman poet Phaedrus (15 BC - 70 AD). Once the great fabulist Aesop went to his neighbors for a fire to cook dinner for his master (Aesop was a slave). When he returned home with a lit lamp, a certain idle person stuck to him and began to taunt: "Why, Aesop, are you walking around with fire during the day?" To which Aesop replied: "I'm looking for a man."

Random phraseology:

Our man in Havana.

Meaning:

About "his" person somewhere (jokingly-iron.).

Origin:

From English: Our man in Havana. The title of a novel (1958) by the English writer Graham Greene (1904-1991) about a man who accidentally became a resident of British intelligence in Cuba.

Artificial leather for touch emulation 15.04.2024

In a modern technology world where distance is becoming increasingly commonplace, maintaining connection and a sense of closeness is important. Recent developments in artificial skin by German scientists from Saarland University represent a new era in virtual interactions. German researchers from Saarland University have developed ultra-thin films that can transmit the sensation of touch over a distance. This cutting-edge technology provides new opportunities for virtual communication, especially for those who find themselves far from their loved ones. The ultra-thin films developed by the researchers, just 50 micrometers thick, can be integrated into textiles and worn like a second skin. These films act as sensors that recognize tactile signals from mom or dad, and as actuators that transmit these movements to the baby. Parents' touch to the fabric activates sensors that react to pressure and deform the ultra-thin film. This ... >>
