Art for art's sake

Germaine de Stael
Germaine de Stael

Phraseologism: Art for art's sake.

Meaning: About the dangers of the search for morality, benefits, realism for the artistic value of the work.

Origin: In France, the phrase "art for art's sake" first appeared in print in 1833, but earlier this concept was popularized by Madame de Stael in her essay "On Germany" (1813) and Victor Cousin (1792-1867) in lectures on philosophy at the Sorbonne "On truth, beauty and good" (1816-1818, published in 1836). Théophile Gautier became the main literary adherent, especially in the preface to his novel Mademoiselle de Maupin (1835). Art for art's sake studies, such as Cassagne's, concentrate on the literary movement of the Second Empire, which included Charles Baudelaire, Théophile Gauthier, Edmond and Jules de Goncourt, and the Parnassian poets.

Random phraseology:

Let the world perish, but justice be done.

Meaning:

It is used as an ironic commentary on a situation where the letter of the law obscures the essence of the matter, and the formal conduct of business obscures the fate of an individual.

Origin:

From Latin: "Pereat mundus et fiat justicia". Erroneously attributed to the world of ancient Roman lawyers. In fact, it belongs to the late European Middle Ages: this is the motto of the emperor (1558-1564) of the Holy Roman Empire of the German nation Ferdinand I. According to the custom of that time, this idea was expressed by him in Latin.

Artificial leather for touch emulation 15.04.2024

In a modern technology world where distance is becoming increasingly commonplace, maintaining connection and a sense of closeness is important. Recent developments in artificial skin by German scientists from Saarland University represent a new era in virtual interactions. German researchers from Saarland University have developed ultra-thin films that can transmit the sensation of touch over a distance. This cutting-edge technology provides new opportunities for virtual communication, especially for those who find themselves far from their loved ones. The ultra-thin films developed by the researchers, just 50 micrometers thick, can be integrated into textiles and worn like a second skin. These films act as sensors that recognize tactile signals from mom or dad, and as actuators that transmit these movements to the baby. Parents' touch to the fabric activates sensors that react to pressure and deform the ultra-thin film. This ... >>
