Poor Yorick!

William Shakespeare
William Shakespeare

Phraseologism: Poor Yorick!

Meaning: Regret about the frailty of being (jokingly-iron.).

Origin: From English: Poor Yorick! From the play (act. 5, scene 1) "Hamlet" (1601) by the English playwright William Shakespeare (1564-1616), the exclamation of Prince Hamlet over the skull of Yorick, the former royal jester whom Hamlet loved.

Random phraseology:

Can't be found during the day with fire.

Meaning:

It is very difficult, almost impossible to find someone, anything (often disapproved).

Origin:

The expression, according to one version, is associated with the legend of the Greek cynic philosopher Diogenes (400-323 BC), who walked around in the crowd of people during the day with a lit lantern in his hands and, when asked what he was looking for, answered: "I'm looking for a man!" - that is, a real person among a spoiled society, hence the current expression: "you cannot find such a person with a fire (lantern) in the daytime." According to another version, this is a purely Russian proverb that arose without any influence from the story of Diogenes. The originality of the Russian expression is proved both by its rhyming character and by the presence of options: search during the day with fire and search during the day with a candle.

Artificial leather for touch emulation 15.04.2024

In a modern technology world where distance is becoming increasingly commonplace, maintaining connection and a sense of closeness is important. Recent developments in artificial skin by German scientists from Saarland University represent a new era in virtual interactions. German researchers from Saarland University have developed ultra-thin films that can transmit the sensation of touch over a distance. This cutting-edge technology provides new opportunities for virtual communication, especially for those who find themselves far from their loved ones. The ultra-thin films developed by the researchers, just 50 micrometers thick, can be integrated into textiles and worn like a second skin. These films act as sensors that recognize tactile signals from mom or dad, and as actuators that transmit these movements to the baby. Parents' touch to the fabric activates sensors that react to pressure and deform the ultra-thin film. This ... >>
