Origin: From English: Rats leave sinking ship. Rats desert for sake. In world literature, it is first encountered in the play (act. 1, yavl. 2) "The Tempest" (1611) by the English playwright William Shakespeare (1564-1616). It is based on an old sea belief (not corresponding to reality), according to which ship rats foresee an impending catastrophe (shipwreck) and leave the ship in advance.
