DARPA has announced that it is accepting proposals to improve technologies for detecting and recognizing biometric features through walls and other obstacles.

The Biometrics-at-a-distance program project involves the creation of sensors that can identify people at a distance and in a crowd, capturing various characteristic features, including the nature of the heartbeat.

Devices capable of detecting a person behind a wall or in the rubble will not surprise anyone today. Ho DARPA expects something fundamentally more. We are talking about increasing the working distance (now such devices are effective at a distance of less than 10 m and only for not too thick walls).

And most importantly, the new technology should use the individual nature of the heartbeat, which is as unique for different people as fingerprints and the pattern of the iris.
