Floating wind farm Hywind Tampen 28.08.2023

The floating offshore wind farm Hywind Tampen represents a revolutionary step in the development of alternative energy sources. Created by the Norwegian energy company Equinor in collaboration with leading partners, this power plant is designed to provide energy to oil and gas platforms.

At the heart of Hywind Tampen are eleven formidable wind turbines mounted on a special floating platform held at the bottom of the sea rather than the open ocean. It is important to emphasize that this innovative technology is able to function even at great depths.

The power plant has an impressive power output of 88 MW. The energy it generates is used to meet approximately 35% of the annual energy demand of five oil and gas platforms in the Snorre and Gullfaks fields in the North Sea. These platforms, located 140 km off the west coast of Norway, will receive an important contribution from this source.

An outstanding step towards a sustainable and greener future, commented Norwegian Prime Minister Jonas Gahr Stere on the initiative. Importantly, this venture has the potential not only to reduce CO2 emissions, but also to mitigate the impact of a sudden stop in oil and gas production, which is an integral part of the transition to a new energy paradigm.
