The strongest glue

American researchers have created the strongest adhesive that can be used in the aerospace, automotive and construction industries.

Scientists have studied the chemical structure of ordinary plastic and turned it into a reusable adhesive with unique properties. As a starting point in the production of the substance, experts used polystyrene-b-poly(ethylene-co-butylene)-b-polystyrene (an important thermoplastic elastomer that behaves like rubber without being cured).

The source for the manufacture of the most durable adhesive was a rubber-like polymer, which is used in toothbrushes, car steering wheel braid. But the glue was endowed with amazing and powerful properties by changing the chemical structure.

The result was achieved through a process known as dynamic crosslinking, which allows normally incompatible materials to be joined.

Scientists noted that a few drops of the created substance can hold about 136 kilograms of cargo on weight, and the new glue does not lose its properties at temperatures up to 204 degrees Celsius.

Geneticists from France, Switzerland and England, having examined the genomes of several tens of thousands of people, found on the 16th chromosome a group of 28 genes that determine the weight of a person.

Normally, each of us has two such groups, received from the father and mother. But in some, as a result of a mutation, all these 28 genes are present in triplicate. Such people are 20 times more likely than average to be abnormally thin. After that, geneticists studied the chromosomes of 3500 obese people.

It turned out that none of them had a triple set of "thinness genes", but some of these genes had only one copy. Those with this mutation are 43 times more likely to be severely obese than normal. True, the 16th chromosome is to blame for only one percent of all cases of obesity.
