Edward Everett. The most famous aphorisms

  • We have at our disposal three instruments of civilization unknown to antiquity: the art of printing, freely chosen power, and, finally, pure, spiritual religion.
  • Education is a better guardian of freedom than an army ready for war.
  • The main purpose of any knowledge is to make the soul wide and pure.

The existence of an entropy rule for quantum entanglement has been proven 09.05.2024

Quantum mechanics continues to amaze us with its mysterious phenomena and unexpected discoveries. Recently, Bartosz Regula from the RIKEN Center for Quantum Computing and Ludovico Lamy from the University of Amsterdam presented a new discovery that concerns quantum entanglement and its relation to entropy. Quantum entanglement plays an important role in modern quantum information science and technology. However, the complexity of its structure makes understanding and managing it challenging. Regulus and Lamy's discovery shows that quantum entanglement follows an entropy rule similar to that for classical systems. This discovery opens new perspectives in the field of quantum information science and technology, deepening our understanding of quantum entanglement and its connection to thermodynamics. The results of the study indicate the possibility of reversibility of entanglement transformations, which could greatly simplify their use in various quantum technologies. Opening a new rule ... >>

Mini air conditioner Sony Reon Pocket 5 09.05.2024

Summer is a time for relaxation and travel, but often the heat can turn this time into an unbearable torment. Meet a new product from Sony - the Reon Pocket 5 mini-air conditioner, which promises to make summer more comfortable for its users. With it, users can enjoy coolness anytime, anywhere by simply wearing it around their neck. This mini air conditioner is equipped with automatic adjustment of operating modes, as well as temperature and humidity sensors. Thanks to innovative technologies, Reon Pocket 5 adjusts its operation depending on the user's activity and environmental conditions. Users can easily adjust the temperature using a dedicated mobile app connected via Bluetooth. Additionally, specially designed T-shirts and shorts are available for convenience, to which a mini air conditioner can be attached. The device can oh ... >>

Energy from space for Starship 08.05.2024

Producing solar energy in space is becoming more feasible with the advent of new technologies and the development of space programs. The head of the startup Virtus Solis shared his vision of using SpaceX's Starship to create orbital power plants capable of powering the Earth. Startup Virtus Solis has unveiled an ambitious project to create orbital power plants using SpaceX's Starship. This idea could significantly change the field of solar energy production, making it more accessible and cheaper. The core of the startup's plan is to reduce the cost of launching satellites into space using Starship. This technological breakthrough is expected to make solar energy production in space more competitive with traditional energy sources. Virtual Solis plans to build large photovoltaic panels in orbit, using Starship to deliver the necessary equipment. However, one of the key challenges ... >>

To like people, you need to train the brain 30.09.2016

Our perception of other people can change, and for this it is not at all necessary to communicate with a person for a long time, trying to get to know him better - it is enough to exercise the brain a little in a neurobiological laboratory.

Mitsuo Kawato and colleagues from the International Institute for Advanced Telecommunications Research in Kyoto and Brown University analyzed the activity of the cingulate cortex in people who were shown other people's photographs.

The participants in the experiment had to evaluate how much they like or dislike the face in the photo, and a special algorithm searched for characteristic features in brain activity that corresponded to just such an assessment. The cingulate cortex is associated with empathy, emotions, motivations, and social relationships, among other things.

Then came the second stage, when a person was shown someone's photo, which previously seemed neutral to him, and then a disk appeared on the monitor screen. This disk had to be enlarged by an effort of will. There was no specific way, but neuroscientists monitored the activity of the brain of the one who struggled with the disk, and they themselves enlarged the figure on the screen if the brain suddenly gave the right answer. In other words, the participants in the experiment blindly searched for the right solution, but the "neutral face" that they were shown was supposed to push their thoughts in the right direction.

In some cases, the researchers enlarged the disk when the subject's brain gave a signal of sympathy, as if the person saw in front of him not a disk, but a face that he likes. In other cases, the same was done in response to a signal of antipathy, and finally, there were those who were simply asked to look at the disk without doing anything with it. Such training lasted an hour a day for three days and, in the end, brought results: those who "increased" the disk with feelings of sympathy began to like the appearance of people to whom they had previously been indifferent.

With antipathy there was the same picture, only in the other direction: initially neutral faces became slightly unpleasant. The effect was small (that is, no one developed deep sympathy and deep disgust for anyone), but it was quite reliable and, by the way, quite long-lasting: changes in emotional perception lasted at least three months.
