Engineers at the University of California at Santa Barbara have designed an artificial grasshopper that can jump over 30 meters. At the same time, its design itself reaches only 30 centimeters in height.
The whole construction work acts like a spring. It consists of rubber bands and carbon fiber slats. When the actuator (Light Rotating Motor) rotates, it winds the string that compresses the spring. So the drive pulls on the rubber bands and compresses the carbon fiber, bending each bar into a curved shape, similar to a shooting bow. After that, the latch is released and the robot is thrown into the atmosphere.
This mechanism is similar to those used by animals. For example, the leg muscle of a grasshopper also serves as an actuator: when it contracts, it bends the spring-like part of the knee joint, creating the tension necessary for jumping.
The robot can jump over buildings and move efficiently in environments where the movement of wheeled, walking or flying structures is complicated. Also in the future, such mechanisms can be used in the space industry. They are capable of jumping more impressive distances in airless, low gravity environments.
Researchers have already begun working with NASA to refine the device. Engineers hope to have a more advanced version ready for use in outer space in 5 years.
