Photocells for indoor use

16.03.2021

Scottish scientists have developed organic photovoltaic cells that turn indoor light into electricity. The new technology was proposed by scientists from the University of Strathclyde and the University of St. Andrews.

Scientists have designed and manufactured organic photovoltaic cells from plastic-like materials similar to those used in smartphone OLED displays. The result is photocells that allow stable and efficient conversion of indoor light into electricity.

The new solar panel captures light energy and simultaneously provides high-speed visible light communication (VLC) using a MIMO technique that increases the channel bandwidth.

Four photocells made of plastic-like materials were combined into a panel, during the experiments it demonstrated the ability to provide wireless optical communication at a speed of 363 Mbps, while simultaneously producing 11 MWh of electricity. An array of four laser diodes was used as a source of information, each of which transmitted a separate signal.

Organic solar cells show maximum efficiency when operating in the typical indoor light from LED lamps. Such solar panels are easy to manufacture, cost less than inorganic counterparts, and can be flexible, making them easy to integrate into mobile devices.

Further development of organic photovoltaic cells capable of receiving information in the future will make it possible to use entire walls of premises at the same time as a communication channel that supports speeds up to 1 gigabit per second, and as a solar panel that provides electricity to network equipment.

Devices that can independently produce energy and transmit data will allow you to connect a large number of gadgets to the Internet and the power grid. Now in the world there are more than 18 billion mobile devices connected to global networks, and in the next 10 years, given the rapid development of the Internet of things, their number will increase to tens of billions.

The existence of an entropy rule for quantum entanglement has been proven 09.05.2024

Quantum mechanics continues to amaze us with its mysterious phenomena and unexpected discoveries. Recently, Bartosz Regula from the RIKEN Center for Quantum Computing and Ludovico Lamy from the University of Amsterdam presented a new discovery that concerns quantum entanglement and its relation to entropy. Quantum entanglement plays an important role in modern quantum information science and technology. However, the complexity of its structure makes understanding and managing it challenging. Regulus and Lamy's discovery shows that quantum entanglement follows an entropy rule similar to that for classical systems. This discovery opens new perspectives in the field of quantum information science and technology, deepening our understanding of quantum entanglement and its connection to thermodynamics. The results of the study indicate the possibility of reversibility of entanglement transformations, which could greatly simplify their use in various quantum technologies. Opening a new rule ... >>

Energy from space for Starship 08.05.2024

Producing solar energy in space is becoming more feasible with the advent of new technologies and the development of space programs. The head of the startup Virtus Solis shared his vision of using SpaceX's Starship to create orbital power plants capable of powering the Earth. Startup Virtus Solis has unveiled an ambitious project to create orbital power plants using SpaceX's Starship. This idea could significantly change the field of solar energy production, making it more accessible and cheaper. The core of the startup's plan is to reduce the cost of launching satellites into space using Starship. This technological breakthrough is expected to make solar energy production in space more competitive with traditional energy sources. Virtual Solis plans to build large photovoltaic panels in orbit, using Starship to deliver the necessary equipment. However, one of the key challenges ... >>

New method for creating powerful batteries 08.05.2024

With the development of technology and the expanding use of electronics, the issue of creating efficient and safe energy sources is becoming increasingly urgent. Researchers at the University of Queensland have unveiled a new approach to creating high-power zinc-based batteries that could change the landscape of the energy industry. One of the main problems with traditional water-based rechargeable batteries was their low voltage, which limited their use in modern devices. But thanks to a new method developed by scientists, this drawback has been successfully overcome. As part of their research, scientists turned to a special organic compound - catechol. It turned out to be an important component that can improve battery stability and increase its efficiency. This approach has led to a significant increase in the voltage of zinc-ion batteries, making them more competitive. According to scientists, such batteries have several advantages. They have b ... >>

Alcohol content of warm beer 07.05.2024

Beer, as one of the most common alcoholic drinks, has its own unique taste, which can change depending on the temperature of consumption. A new study by an international team of scientists has found that beer temperature has a significant impact on the perception of alcoholic taste. The study, led by materials scientist Lei Jiang, found that at different temperatures, ethanol and water molecules form different types of clusters, which affects the perception of alcoholic taste. At low temperatures, more pyramid-like clusters form, which reduces the pungency of the "ethanol" taste and makes the drink taste less alcoholic. On the contrary, as the temperature increases, the clusters become more chain-like, resulting in a more pronounced alcoholic taste. This explains why the taste of some alcoholic drinks, such as baijiu, can change depending on temperature. The data obtained opens up new prospects for beverage manufacturers, ... >>

RadiForce RX350 Professional Monitor 29.11.2015

EIZO is famous for its high quality monitors, including general purpose monitors. But what makes it unique is other products - specialized display solutions for medicine, research, industry and other areas. For these areas, the company often announces unique monitor models that have no analogues in the world - what is the FlexScan EV2730Q model with a 1:1 aspect ratio and a resolution of 1920 x 1920. The new model, RadiForce RX350, is also very interesting.

First of all, it is curious that in the era of the dominance of the 16:9 format, it has an "outdated" and "unpopular" aspect ratio of 4:3. And more precisely - 3:4, since the default mode of this monitor is portrait. The diagonal of the IPS matrix is 21,3 inches, and the resolution is 1536 x 2048; it was this maximum resolution that the best CRT-based monitors could boast of in their time. The maximum brightness of the RX350 inspires respect as it is 1000 cd/m2; however, for calibration it is recommended to set the mode to 500 cd/m2. The contrast level is also high - 1500 to 1, which is higher than typical indicators for IPS matrices.

The response time is 25 milliseconds, but this model is not intended for games. Its main purpose is medicine, or rather, viewing high-resolution x-rays, computer and MRI tomograms, including synthesized three-dimensional ones. Since we are talking about human health, and even life, maximum display accuracy is extremely important here, so RadiForce RX350 has full support for 10-bit color and is equipped with tools to achieve maximum image clarity (Sharpness Recovery). There are two versions of the screen coating, anti-glare (Anti-Glare coating) and minimizing the mirror effect (Anti-Reflection coating).

The novelty can work in chain mode, as it is equipped with a DisplayPort pass-through interface. Curiously, the official list of compatible graphics cards mainly includes professional AMD models supplied to customers under the EIZO MED-X brand. As for other characteristics of the RadiForce RX350, it is equipped with an ergonomic stand that allows you to turn it into landscape mode, but the standard VESA 100 x 100 mount is also supported. With the stand, the monitor weighs 8,1 kilograms, the maximum power consumption is 89 watts.
