Focus Description:

Place three empty matchboxes, six matches and three pieces of paper on the table. Ask to wrap one match in a piece of paper and put one match in any of the boxes, then wrap two matches in paper and put the bundle in another box, and the remaining three matches wrapped in paper in the third box. All boxes are closed.

Turn your back and ask someone to mix the boxes. Then have the audience give you a box one at a time. Take turns guessing how many matches are in each box.

Focus secret:

Two boxes must be prepared in advance. On the outside of one of them, squeeze a hole from the inside with a nail so that a tubercle appears on the outside, which can be easily felt if you run your finger across the box. On another box, squeeze out two holes.

While the viewer wraps the matches in paper and puts the packages in the boxes, you need to remember how many matches are in each box. This is easy to do as follows: if one match is placed in a box with two bumps, you need to remember the number 21. Here the number 2 means two bumps, and the number 1 means one match.

If two matches are placed in a box without tubercles, you need to remember the number 20. If three matches are placed in a box with one tubercle, you need to remember the number 13. Depending on the placement of the matches, you will have to memorize different numbers.

Turning your back to the audience, ask someone to mix the boxes and give you any of them. When you have the box in your hands, turn to face the audience, holding your hands behind your back and feeling the bumps on the box.

If there are two of them, remember the number that starts with two - 21. This means that there is one match in the box. The contents of other boxes are guessed in exactly the same way.

Artificial leather for touch emulation 15.04.2024

In a modern technology world where distance is becoming increasingly commonplace, maintaining connection and a sense of closeness is important. Recent developments in artificial skin by German scientists from Saarland University represent a new era in virtual interactions. German researchers from Saarland University have developed ultra-thin films that can transmit the sensation of touch over a distance. This cutting-edge technology provides new opportunities for virtual communication, especially for those who find themselves far from their loved ones. The ultra-thin films developed by the researchers, just 50 micrometers thick, can be integrated into textiles and worn like a second skin. These films act as sensors that recognize tactile signals from mom or dad, and as actuators that transmit these movements to the baby. Parents' touch to the fabric activates sensors that react to pressure and deform the ultra-thin film. This ... >>

The attractiveness of caring men 14.04.2024

The stereotype that women prefer "bad boys" has long been widespread. However, recent research conducted by British scientists from Monash University offers a new perspective on this issue. They looked at how women responded to men's emotional responsibility and willingness to help others. The study's findings could change our understanding of what makes men attractive to women. A study conducted by scientists from Monash University leads to new findings about men's attractiveness to women. In the experiment, women were shown photographs of men with brief stories about their behavior in various situations, including their reaction to an encounter with a homeless person. Some of the men ignored the homeless man, while others helped him, such as buying him food. A study found that men who showed empathy and kindness were more attractive to women compared to men who showed empathy and kindness. ... >>

One injection will relieve nicotine addiction 18.03.2016

Quitting smoking is not an easy task, but now scientists have created an anti-nicotine vaccine, which in the future can help a person get rid of this habit in just one shot.

Why is it so difficult to quit smoking? It's all about nicotine, which is highly addictive, and a new vaccine could help a smoker's body attack nicotine molecules before they reach the brain, thereby removing their effect along with the person's urge to smoke.

The anti-nicotine vaccine idea is not new. For the first time they started talking about it a couple of years ago, but then it worked only on 30% of the subjects. Now researchers have improved it by changing the molecules that alert the immune system and thus make it attack nicotine. With the right concentration of carrier proteins and nicotine molecules, the mice developed an active antibody response, meaning the vaccine worked. In addition, when given a second dose of nicotine, vaccinated mice had an extremely reduced and blunted response to this chemical.

In future studies, the scientists plan to study the physical dynamics between different vaccine molecules and the immune system to determine the concentration of antibodies needed for the vaccine to work properly.

While the anti-nicotine vaccine is not yet commercially available, studies show that it can be extremely effective. Moreover, a similar technique could be used to treat other addictions, for example, the same researchers are working on an anti-opioid drug right now.

It is worth recalling how smoking can affect not only your body, but also your genes.
