Focus Description:

There are many colorful scarves on the illusionist’s table. He takes one of them. The corner is tied into a knot and, lifting the scarf, leaves it in the air. Instead of falling to the floor, the handkerchief hangs motionless in space. The performer takes the second, third, fourth and finally the fifth scarf and hangs them all in a row, like flags. The scarves froze in the air (Fig. 43).

After letting the handkerchiefs hang in space a little, the performer lightly touches each one. And each one smoothly falls to the floor at his touch.

Focus secret:

For the trick you will need 5-6 multi-colored handkerchiefs made of light silk fabric measuring 25x25 cm and a piece of very strong black thread several meters long. It’s better to have a whole spool: the scenes are not the same everywhere, and the thread will have to be stretched across its entire width from one curtain to another. You will also need two secret assistants.

Before the performance, all handkerchiefs are placed on the illusion table. The thread is carried along the floor across the entire stage from one end to the other, where two assistants stand behind the scenes. They must closely monitor the magician's performance and be ready every minute. You need to agree in advance with them what order this trick will go in order.

When starting the demonstration, the performer approaches the illusion table, takes five multi-colored handkerchiefs and goes to the front of the stage. Transferring them one by one from one hand to another, he shows the audience closer. At this time, the backstage assistants take each end of the thread and, lifting it from the floor, pull it in the air at the height of the performer’s shoulders.

Now the magician, moving into the depths of the stage, ties knots in turn on each handkerchief and hooks them with knots onto a stretched thread, which remains completely invisible to the viewer. When all the handkerchiefs are on the thread, the performer makes several passes with his hand in their direction, as if forcing them to obey and hang in that position for as long as necessary. Then each of them is slightly pulled, and the handkerchiefs, having jumped off the thread, smoothly fall to the floor, and the assistants lower the thread again.

Solidification of bulk substances 30.04.2024

There are quite a few mysteries in the world of science, and one of them is the strange behavior of bulk materials. They may behave like a solid but suddenly turn into a flowing liquid. This phenomenon has attracted the attention of many researchers, and we may finally be getting closer to solving this mystery. Imagine sand in an hourglass. It usually flows freely, but in some cases its particles begin to get stuck, turning from a liquid to a solid. This transition has important implications for many areas, from drug production to construction. Researchers from the USA have attempted to describe this phenomenon and come closer to understanding it. In the study, the scientists conducted simulations in the laboratory using data from bags of polystyrene beads. They found that the vibrations within these sets had specific frequencies, meaning that only certain types of vibrations could travel through the material. Received ... >>

Implanted brain stimulator 30.04.2024

In recent years, scientific research in the field of neurotechnology has made enormous progress, opening new horizons for the treatment of various psychiatric and neurological disorders. One of the significant achievements was the creation of the smallest implanted brain stimulator, presented by a laboratory at Rice University. Called Digitally Programmable Over-brain Therapeutic (DOT), this innovative device promises to revolutionize treatments by providing more autonomy and accessibility to patients. The implant, developed in collaboration with Motif Neurotech and clinicians, introduces an innovative approach to brain stimulation. It is powered through an external transmitter using magnetoelectric power transfer, eliminating the need for wires and large batteries typical of existing technologies. This makes the procedure less invasive and provides more opportunities to improve patients' quality of life. In addition to its use in treatment, resist ... >>

The perception of time depends on what one is looking at 29.04.2024

Research in the field of the psychology of time continues to surprise us with its results. Recent discoveries by scientists from George Mason University (USA) turned out to be quite remarkable: they discovered that what we look at can greatly influence our sense of time. During the experiment, 52 participants took a series of tests, estimating the duration of viewing various images. The results were surprising: the size and detail of the images had a significant impact on the perception of time. Larger, less cluttered scenes created the illusion of time slowing down, while smaller, busier images gave the feeling of time speeding up. Researchers suggest that visual clutter or detail overload can make it difficult to perceive the world around us, which in turn can lead to faster perception of time. Thus, it was shown that our perception of time is closely related to what we look at. Larger and smaller ... >>

Plasma with ultra-fast cooling mechanism 18.02.2021

Researchers at Advanced Imaging of Matter have made a breakthrough by creating a completely new type of plasma by combining state-of-the-art technology using ultrashort laser pulses and ultracold atomic gases. They reported a new mechanism for electron cooling in such a plasma.

Matter exists in four states - solid, gas, liquid and plasma, with plasma being the most common state in the visible universe. It is made up of free charged particles such as ions and electrons. Plasma can exist in a huge range of temperatures and densities: from the core of the Sun to lightning or flames. The challenge in understanding plasma dynamics is to first identify universal mechanisms and then compare them to a controlled laboratory experiment.

At the Center for Optical Quantum Technology at the University of Hamburg, researchers cool and trap atoms with laser light. They use the intense light field of an ultrashort laser pulse to separate atoms into electrons and ions within 200 femtoseconds. A femtosecond is one millionth of one billionth of a second. Due to the extremely low initial temperature of atoms, ions have a temperature below 40 millikelvins, which is only slightly above the lowest possible temperature in the universe -273°C. On the contrary, electrons are initially very hot with a temperature of 4977°C, close to the temperatures on the surface of the Sun.

Hot electrons, directly generated by the ultrashort laser pulse, begin to escape and leave a positively charged region that captures some of the electrons in the ultracold plasma. Such a state of plasma has never been observed before. The researchers observed that trapped electrons in the plasma cool on ultra-fast time scales and measured the final temperature. In addition, they noticed that the plasma is stable for several hundred nanoseconds, which is a very long time for such systems.

Such ultracold plasma serves as a reference for theoretical models and can shed light on the extreme conditions present in inertial confinement fusion or astronomical objects such as white dwarfs. Moreover, the obtained ultracold electrons are interesting in themselves as a bright source for visualization of biological samples.
