voice of corn

03.12.2016

American scientists have recorded the sounds that a growing corn stalk makes. Why listen to corn? To save the crops in the fields of Iowa and Illinois.

The worst thing that can happen in a cornfield is a hurricane. A strong wind breaks the fragile high stems of plants, and the crop is on the ground. In such cases, farmers say that the corn has died.

To combat corn lodging, botanists and engineers decided to study in detail how the stalk grows. To do this, they installed piezoelectric contact microphones and recorded the sounds that a growing stem makes. By sounds, you can determine at what point the deformation occurs. The same method is used to "listen" to buildings when it is necessary to determine where there are cracks in the structure.

When a corn stalk breaks, it makes sounds similar to popcorn being cooked, but very quiet, the scientists said. "Now we think that millions of micro-tears occur as plants grow, which trigger the plant's mechanism to 'repair' damage. With constant tears and repair, the plant can grow taller and taller," explains research team leader Douglas Cook.

Knowing exactly how microfractures form will help breeders develop lodging-resistant corn. The next step is computer and magnetic resonance imaging of corn, which will allow modeling the growth of the stalk.

The USA is the world's leading producer of corn. Most of the biomass goes to the production of ethyl alcohol and its derivatives, as well as animal feed; about 11% of corn is used to make sweeteners. Popcorn, canned and fresh corn for human consumption consumes less than 1% of all corn produced.

The existence of an entropy rule for quantum entanglement has been proven 09.05.2024

Quantum mechanics continues to amaze us with its mysterious phenomena and unexpected discoveries. Recently, Bartosz Regula from the RIKEN Center for Quantum Computing and Ludovico Lamy from the University of Amsterdam presented a new discovery that concerns quantum entanglement and its relation to entropy. Quantum entanglement plays an important role in modern quantum information science and technology. However, the complexity of its structure makes understanding and managing it challenging. Regulus and Lamy's discovery shows that quantum entanglement follows an entropy rule similar to that for classical systems. This discovery opens new perspectives in the field of quantum information science and technology, deepening our understanding of quantum entanglement and its connection to thermodynamics. The results of the study indicate the possibility of reversibility of entanglement transformations, which could greatly simplify their use in various quantum technologies. Opening a new rule ... >>

New method for creating powerful batteries 08.05.2024

With the development of technology and the expanding use of electronics, the issue of creating efficient and safe energy sources is becoming increasingly urgent. Researchers at the University of Queensland have unveiled a new approach to creating high-power zinc-based batteries that could change the landscape of the energy industry. One of the main problems with traditional water-based rechargeable batteries was their low voltage, which limited their use in modern devices. But thanks to a new method developed by scientists, this drawback has been successfully overcome. As part of their research, scientists turned to a special organic compound - catechol. It turned out to be an important component that can improve battery stability and increase its efficiency. This approach has led to a significant increase in the voltage of zinc-ion batteries, making them more competitive. According to scientists, such batteries have several advantages. They have b ... >>

Alcohol content of warm beer 07.05.2024

Beer, as one of the most common alcoholic drinks, has its own unique taste, which can change depending on the temperature of consumption. A new study by an international team of scientists has found that beer temperature has a significant impact on the perception of alcoholic taste. The study, led by materials scientist Lei Jiang, found that at different temperatures, ethanol and water molecules form different types of clusters, which affects the perception of alcoholic taste. At low temperatures, more pyramid-like clusters form, which reduces the pungency of the "ethanol" taste and makes the drink taste less alcoholic. On the contrary, as the temperature increases, the clusters become more chain-like, resulting in a more pronounced alcoholic taste. This explains why the taste of some alcoholic drinks, such as baijiu, can change depending on temperature. The data obtained opens up new prospects for beverage manufacturers, ... >>

New 75V StrongIRFET transistors from IR with ultra-low RDSon 17.12.2014

International Rectifier's StrongIRFETT series of industrial ultra-low channel resistance transistors has expanded its operating voltage range with a new 75V family in addition to the earlier 40V and 60V families.

The main application segments of this series of MOSFETs are industrial systems such as: power tools, electric cars and other electrically driven industrial vehicles, battery protection systems, hot plug devices and synchronous rectifier output stages in high power switching power supplies.

The new 75V StrongIRFETT family of transistors features ultra-low on-resistance to improve the efficiency of systems operating in the low frequency range, provide high operating and surge currents, contain a built-in anti-parallel diode with a soft recovery characteristic and have a 3V turn-on threshold, which improves their resistance to external interference. Each manufactured transistor is tested at the highest levels of avalanche current capability, which allows the manufacturer to guarantee the maximum reliability of this series MOSFET for industrial applications.

StrongIRFETT transistors are available in standard lead-out and surface mount packages. The use of high-tech packages, such as D2-Pak-7 (TO-263-7), allows you to achieve an open transistor impedance of less than 2 mΩ and provides a peak operating current of up to 240 A. All transistors in the series have an extended chip operating temperature range: from -55 to +175°С.
