Focus Description:

On the illusion table, among other objects, lies a cylinder. The performer takes it and shows it to the audience. They see that the cylinder is empty. Putting it upside down on the table, the performer puts a tray on top of the cylinder, and a small cube on the empty tray. Then he takes a case shaped like the same cube and covers it (Fig. 53, A).

Raising the case, the performer shows its inside. She is empty. And the cube disappeared from the tray.

Putting the case of the cube aside, the performer removes the tray from the cylinder and takes out the missing cube from it.

Focus secret:

The trick requires a cylinder (or any box), a small tray, and three identical black plywood or cardboard cubes. Two are made in the form of cases - they are missing one wall, and inside they are hollow and painted black. One of these two case cubes is slightly smaller and fits freely into the other. For viewers, the difference in their size is elusive (Fig. 53, B).

The third cube is also empty inside, but it has all six sides. It has a secret - it is foldable. All of its sides can be folded so that it turns into a plate that can be placed under any flat object, such as a tray. But one has only to lift the tray, as the plate instantly becomes a cube.

The upper and lower walls of this cube are made of two solid plates, and the side walls are each divided in half horizontally and thus consist of two halves. Finally, the last two sides - front and back - are made of dense black matter. All seams and edges of the cube are also pasted over with black matter. Then the cube is painted over with black paint and white circles are applied to each of its sides. Now all three cubes look exactly the same.

The first two case cubes are placed side by side on the illusion table on one side of the cylinder, and a tray is placed on the other side. The secret cube is folded: the performer presses on the upper wall of the cube - its side walls are folded in half, going inward, and the front and back fabric walls do not prevent this. The cube takes the form of a square plate. It is placed on the edge of the tray. Then the performer takes the cylinder with one hand, the tray with the other hand, together with the “loading” of the secret cube, pressing it with his hand to the underside of the tray, and shows the audience that the cylinder and tray are completely empty. After that, he puts the cylinder on the table with the margins up, and puts a tray on it. At this moment, the "charge" of the secret cube, having been released, falls and opens inside the cylinder (Fig. 53, E).

The performer now takes the smaller case cube and places it on the tray, empty side down. Then he takes the second, larger cube-case and, showing it to the audience with an empty bottom, covers the first cube-case with it. Pressing the sides, the performer raises the cube. Together with him, he raises the first, hidden inside. It is also without a bottom, and without any fear it can be turned by emptiness towards the auditorium. Spectators see that the cube-case is still empty. And where the second cube went, they will not know. The performer puts the case cube aside, then removes the tray from the cylinder and takes out the secret cube from there.

Artificial leather for touch emulation 15.04.2024

In a modern technology world where distance is becoming increasingly commonplace, maintaining connection and a sense of closeness is important. Recent developments in artificial skin by German scientists from Saarland University represent a new era in virtual interactions. German researchers from Saarland University have developed ultra-thin films that can transmit the sensation of touch over a distance. This cutting-edge technology provides new opportunities for virtual communication, especially for those who find themselves far from their loved ones. The ultra-thin films developed by the researchers, just 50 micrometers thick, can be integrated into textiles and worn like a second skin. These films act as sensors that recognize tactile signals from mom or dad, and as actuators that transmit these movements to the baby. Parents' touch to the fabric activates sensors that react to pressure and deform the ultra-thin film. This ... >>

The attractiveness of caring men 14.04.2024

The stereotype that women prefer "bad boys" has long been widespread. However, recent research conducted by British scientists from Monash University offers a new perspective on this issue. They looked at how women responded to men's emotional responsibility and willingness to help others. The study's findings could change our understanding of what makes men attractive to women. A study conducted by scientists from Monash University leads to new findings about men's attractiveness to women. In the experiment, women were shown photographs of men with brief stories about their behavior in various situations, including their reaction to an encounter with a homeless person. Some of the men ignored the homeless man, while others helped him, such as buying him food. A study found that men who showed empathy and kindness were more attractive to women compared to men who showed empathy and kindness. ... >>

When walls kill 07.11.2010

A serious problem for hospitals around the world is Staphylococcus aureus, which has become resistant to most antibiotics. A new method of dealing with it was proposed by nanotechnologists from the Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (USA). They created a wall paint that was mixed with carbon nanotubes dressed in lysostaphin.

This enzyme, produced by another species of bacteria, destroys Staphylococcus aureus cells, and resistance to the enzyme is not known to develop. On a surface covered with such paint, 99% of staphylococci die in ten minutes. Other microbes are not affected.
